IN THIS POST: — polymer clay earrings — earring findings — earwires — polymer clay cane designs — sculpted flowers — polymer clay jewelry — polymer clay earring designs — polymer clay jewelry ideas — earring designs — jewelry — handmade jewelry — (Topics marked with an asterick* are discussed in the Comments Section below).

In today’s video I want to show you 1,000,001 polymer clay earrings… well not quite, but there are a ton! :)

Making earrings is one of my favorite things to do with polymer clay. The polymer medium is super light, so it is perfect for wearing on your ears, and it’s so colorful and versatile too. You can make it look like anything you like!

Being super busy right now, and not having a lot of time for making up samples for our (your) next YouYube video, I was looking for something to show today that was already on hand. And there on my windowsill, was the rack of earrings made with a whole bunch of different techniques. So I am taking the opportunity to talk about earrings… lots of them!

As you are watching this video, if there is a specific technique you want more information about, just post a comment and I will dig up a link for you.

Or… you could type the name of the technique that I refer to in the video, into the search box here at the blog website, and you will be able to find references that way too.

I hope this jam packed video gives you lots of inspiring ideas, so that you can start expanding upon your own collection of polymer clay earrings.

00:00:03 –> 00:00:07 Hi guys! This is Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor in today’s Studio Tip and I’m going

00:00:07 –> 00:00:12 to show you a million and one polymer clay earrings, well not quite a million and one

00:00:12 –> 00:00:17 but a whole bunch of them. I was super busy this week and I was supposed to be getting

00:00:17 –> 00:00:21 some other samples ready and I thought what am I going to show you and I was sitting there

00:00:21 –> 00:00:26 looking out the window and staring at a bunch of my earrings, and I thought you know what

00:00:26 –> 00:00:33 one of my favorite things to make with polymer clay, is earrings and it’s because they are–

00:00:33 –> 00:00:38 polymer clay is so light it’s easy to wear for earrings, it’s so versatile you can make

00:00:38 –> 00:00:45 it look like anything and I just want to show you a million different types of variations

00:00:45 –> 00:00:50 on what kind of earrings you can make just with polymer clay. A lot of these are samples

00:00:50 –> 00:00:56 from previous tutorials so I’ll mention them, I’ll also show you some of the different ways

00:00:56 –> 00:01:01 that I have put some of these earrings together so I just thought I would show them to you.

00:01:01 –> 00:01:06 Alright, so here they are, I’ve got whatever I could find just sitting around these other

00:01:06 –> 00:01:11 than the ones that are on the cards here in the middle. All the other ones or ones that

00:01:11 –> 00:01:16 I wear myself every day. I even am wearing a pair right now which I’ll pull out here

00:01:16 –> 00:01:23 to show you and even these delightful little light earrings are made with polymer clay.

00:01:23 –> 00:01:31 The butterflies are made with polymerized fabric and– are these fabric no no these

00:01:31 –> 00:01:41 ones were image transfers, but it’s light, it’s airy and I put a– I did them on a homemade

00:01:41 –> 00:01:47 ear wire with some Swarovski crystals and they just look really cute. There’s just tons

00:01:47 –> 00:01:52 and tons of them here so let me just run through them to show you what you can make. Now the

00:01:52 –> 00:01:59 first little pair here are some very delicate little ones, made with cane slices from the

00:01:59 –> 00:02:06 Parrot Tulip Tutorial but I took the ear wire– the wire that I put in through instead of

00:02:06 –> 00:02:14 using a regular head pin I torched a little copper wire head pin and made the wire come

00:02:14 –> 00:02:18 up shaped like a leaf so it looked just like a tulip sitting on there. And they use little

00:02:18 –> 00:02:27 wire crimps here and just under the tulip to keep the tulip head from sliding down.

00:02:27 –> 00:02:31 These earrings here look really heavy but because they’re made of polymer clay, they’re

00:02:31 –> 00:02:42 super light. They are made with the Faux Jasper tutorial and I’ve got these little findings

00:02:42 –> 00:02:47 on the back that I found, they’re earring findings that I just attached the faux Jasper

00:02:47 –> 00:02:57 stone – and then hung some little dangles from there with some real stone chips. These

00:02:57 –> 00:03:08 earrings here are made from the Raindrops and Foxglove Tutorial and they have a pretty

00:03:08 –> 00:03:15 little blended flower here with some little speckles on the inside and they’re quite simply

00:03:15 –> 00:03:23 done, I just use the jump ring and some closeable whatever those kind of earring findings are.

00:03:23 –> 00:03:30 Now, the ones in the center here are all ones that I have put on cards to get ready to sell.

00:03:30 –> 00:03:41 Now, I do have a little tutorial somewhere in my videos showing how to make one of these

00:03:41 –> 00:03:47 earring cards and I just used a die cutting machine and folded a special way and cut it

00:03:47 –> 00:03:53 out and punch holes in it and it’s a great way to hang earrings on whatever size that

00:03:53 –> 00:03:59 you have. I write on the back the name of the earrings, if they have a name. This one

00:03:59 –> 00:04:06 I named gossamer, then I list out the different supplies used and then the website and on

00:04:06 –> 00:04:13 the front my signature so I can get kind of a customized look. I can choose the handmade

00:04:13 –> 00:04:20 papers or the the scrapbooking papers to go with the different earring styles. And it

00:04:20 –> 00:04:25 can make quite a unified look for your jewelry line if you have one. These earrings are pod

00:04:25 –> 00:04:35 earrings made with the glow-in-the-dark Spiral Cane or Jelly Roll Cane video. Here is the

00:04:35 –> 00:04:41 same Cane used in a slice instead of the pod. These earrings, if you charge them up under

00:04:41 –> 00:04:48 the light and then wear them in the dark, they actually glow which is quite neat. This

00:04:48 –> 00:04:58 pair of earrings were created using the Faux Burlwood Technique and they’re just sanded

00:04:58 –> 00:05:03 and buffed to a real high shine, they just feel amazing it’s hard to tell even what they

00:05:03 –> 00:05:09 are made of. They do look like they’re made of real wood. I’ve used a little rivet eyelet

00:05:09 –> 00:05:16 in the center here, made a handmade ear wire and then I put a tiger’s eye bead on the top.

00:05:16 –> 00:05:22 That is a really nice tip to really elevate the polymer clay, if you add real gemstones

00:05:22 –> 00:05:27 and and higher quality findings, it will make the piece seem more expensive rather than

00:05:27 –> 00:05:33 just like a little hunk of plastic which polymer technically is. But when you see all these

00:05:33 –> 00:05:41 different things, it’s not really the same. This pair of earrings are made with delphinium

00:05:41 –> 00:05:48 flower petals ground up and added to the polymer clay there in the beads and then I added sterling

00:05:48 –> 00:05:56 silver findings and Swarovski crystals and a handmade ear wire in a big large circle.

00:05:56 –> 00:06:01 And I love these, these would be perfect for wearing to a wedding or something like that.

00:06:01 –> 00:06:08 Here are a pair of earrings, they were used with the leftover scraps from the full Labradorite

00:06:08 –> 00:06:14 Tutorial and that’s a great way to use them up. They’re a pair of stud earrings and when

00:06:14 –> 00:06:18 you do a large technique or a technique on a sheet like that and you’ve used them up

00:06:18 –> 00:06:22 the larger pieces up, it’s nice to be able to use up the smaller ones for something like

00:06:22 –> 00:06:33 stud earrings. Here is a really unique pair. They are from the Iris Flower Tutorial and

00:06:33 –> 00:06:38 I’ve done some copper wrapping at the top here and made up a large loop and then some

00:06:38 –> 00:06:46 handmade teardrop-shaped ear wires, made out of copper as well. Here are a little pair

00:06:46 –> 00:06:54 of studs made over– made with some left over Faux Wood from a Faux Wood Tutorial. And this

00:06:54 –> 00:07:00 pair of earrings are quite neat looking, they look very heavy but they’re not. They have–

00:07:00 –> 00:07:10 I used the Rose ear wires from one of my tutorials and then this is a polymer clay bead that

00:07:10 –> 00:07:16 is from the Texture, Texture, Texture, tutorial and it’s done use using string wrapped around

00:07:16 –> 00:07:21 the polymer clay and stuff like that and it gives us really neat crackled deep texture.

00:07:21 –> 00:07:30 Then I used some wire links to–and this is a piece of jade, real jade and then these

00:07:30 –> 00:07:38 little wire or not wire, metal pieces at the bottom are actually embossed metal using the

00:07:38 –> 00:07:45 Sizzix and Vintaj embossing plates that you can run through your die-cutting machine.

00:07:45 –> 00:07:52 It’s really neat and it’s a nice thing to add in with your polymer clay earrings. Now,

00:07:52 –> 00:07:58 we’ve got a lot of them back here I’ll try to go a little quicker through these ones.

00:07:58 –> 00:08:02 These are ones that I wear all the time in fact a bunch of these were all piled on here

00:08:02 –> 00:08:11 as well but I’ve got a pair of large hoops here with some polymer clay leave slices on

00:08:11 –> 00:08:18 here and some bright-colored seed beads on just to accent them. That– those ones I can

00:08:18 –> 00:08:24 swap out because it’s a earring hoop I can just swap out whatever kind of polymer clay

00:08:24 –> 00:08:32 piece I want to add to that It makes them reusable. This heart bead was made using some

00:08:32 –> 00:08:37 scrap clay from the Faux Fordite Tutorial and I’ve got a little tutorial free tutorial

00:08:37 –> 00:08:45 on making these heart beads and I’ve just added a shell carved leaf underneath and a

00:08:45 –> 00:08:50 large handmade ear wire. And you’ll see that most of my ear wires are all handmade, it

00:08:50 –> 00:08:55 makes them more unique. You can make them to suit your piece and use whatever metals

00:08:55 –> 00:09:02 that you want to use. These earrings here were made, they have kind of a real old fashioned

00:09:02 –> 00:09:08 beautiful look to them. They’re made with the rose ear wire tutorial and then a bead

00:09:08 –> 00:09:18 made from the art sheet technique that was done in the watercolor technique way of layering

00:09:18 –> 00:09:23 and then I’ve got some bead caps and stuff on the top and the bottom. They have a very

00:09:23 –> 00:09:32 antique look to them. These two earrings are actually made from pieces from the same tutorial,

00:09:32 –> 00:09:38 they’re from the Shoreline Bracelet Tutorial. I had leftover pieces so I made earrings.

00:09:38 –> 00:09:44 This is a– all polymer clay here and it looks like a beach scene I’ve got– so I added a

00:09:44 –> 00:09:49 freshwater pearl because that makes sense with the beach and it has a large ear wire

00:09:49 –> 00:09:55 with a large loop and and a long piece that comes down and behind it’s very cool looking.

00:09:55 –> 00:10:02 I wear those a ton. These were also done from the same series but they were blended a little

00:10:02 –> 00:10:09 more so the colors are more muted and more blended, less rocks and more just sort of

00:10:09 –> 00:10:16 painterly beach kind of scene to it, also very pretty. These earrings here were made

00:10:16 –> 00:10:23 with the Hollow Lentil Bead Tutorial with the Reptile Cane. They are reversible so you

00:10:23 –> 00:10:27 can actually just pop this around and where that way if you want. You can– there’s a

00:10:27 –> 00:10:32 lot of things that you could make earrings that you could make that could be reversible

00:10:32 –> 00:10:38 so think about that as far as your designs go. They are super light too, they look heavy

00:10:38 –> 00:10:45 but they’re really light. These earrings are made with the Metal Mokume Gane technique

00:10:45 –> 00:10:52 and then they’ve got some little freshwater pearls underneath. They have a heavy kind

00:10:52 –> 00:10:58 of look to them but they’re light. These earrings here are neat, they have–they’re made using

00:10:58 –> 00:11:06 the Sculpey templates for tracing out different shapes on polymer clay and I layered them

00:11:06 –> 00:11:12 in two layers, popped some seed beads in between to get them to sit out from each other and

00:11:12 –> 00:11:18 then the– the ear wire I echoed the same kind of triangular shape that the front pieces

00:11:18 –> 00:11:28 have in the shape of the ear wire. Now, these two earring sets are from the same tutorial

00:11:28 –> 00:11:37 they are from a tutorial called Tornado and Torpedo Beads and these are the torpedo beads,

00:11:37 –> 00:11:44 they look like a torpedo they have a wonderful striped technique to them and then these beads

00:11:44 –> 00:11:48 are done with wire and little seed beads and they’re called Tornado beads because they

00:11:48 –> 00:11:55 look like they’ve just been twisted up in a tornado. Down here, I’ve got some delicate

00:11:55 –> 00:12:03 long beads here or earrings here that are from the Faux Fordite Tutorial. This is the

00:12:03 –> 00:12:09 the Fordite Technique down here, they’re little cabochons and then they’re added with some

00:12:09 –> 00:12:16 handmade ear wires and so our Swarovski crystals. These earrings here, I love these I wear them

00:12:16 –> 00:12:23 all the time they have a very graphic kind of playful look. The hearts are made from

00:12:23 –> 00:12:31 the Street Hearts Tutorial and then I made ear wires using niobium wire that is colored

00:12:31 –> 00:12:36 using electricity. And then I did a nice big hoop at the bottom so this would have room

00:12:36 –> 00:12:43 to move and put some brightly colored seed beads on. And then added a very angular look

00:12:43 –> 00:12:50 to the top of the ear wire just to give it that kind of edgy look. Here are some earrings

00:12:50 –> 00:12:58 made with a little owls from the Owl Necklace Tutorial or Owl Charm Necklace– I don’t know

00:12:58 –> 00:13:03 it’s something like that. The owls are actually on a charm necklace that we make but I’ve

00:13:03 –> 00:13:08 added some stick pearls underneath so it looks like they’re standing on little branches and

00:13:08 –> 00:13:17 they’re very cute and kind of sassy little owls. Here’s some earrings made using the

00:13:17 –> 00:13:24 Cone Flower Technique, it’s a cane tutorial where we have to use Skinner Blends and put

00:13:24 –> 00:13:29 them together in a unique way so that each slice ends up shifting in color. So you can

00:13:29 –> 00:13:34 see this one here is a little more purple and this one’s a little more orange really

00:13:34 –> 00:13:42 lovely pair earrings with big Swarovski crystals in there. Down here are some earrings made

00:13:42 –> 00:13:50 using the torpedo bead technique but I used a slice of rainbow cane from there and just

00:13:50 –> 00:13:57 used them in this way and they have kind of a youthful look to them. These earrings I

00:13:57 –> 00:14:04 wear all the time when it’s raining, they are– they are shaped like a cloud and a raindrop

00:14:04 –> 00:14:08 but they are from the Puffy Bead Tutorial so they actually have a little puff of air

00:14:08 –> 00:14:15 on the inside of them, they’re super lightweight and they have an airy kind of feel to them.

00:14:15 –> 00:14:20 These earrings here, I have them in two different colors are from the Sweet Pea Tutorial and

00:14:20 –> 00:14:29 they’re created using the Wilton Gum Paste Cake Decorating Cutters to make sweet peas

00:14:29 –> 00:14:34 of stuff and– and they’re really a fun pair of earrings. I kept a couple pair in two different

00:14:34 –> 00:14:42 colors they also have the Swarovski crystal and handmade ear wires and things. They’re

00:14:42 –> 00:14:49 really pretty and delicate, I love them. Now, I won’t go in as much detail in these ones

00:14:49 –> 00:14:53 because we’re starting to use up a ton of time but there’s lots here from lots of different

00:14:53 –> 00:15:02 tutorials I’ve got Poinsettia from the Poinsettia Cane or Poinsettia Tutorial, from the Nautical

00:15:02 –> 00:15:08 Anchor Cane Tutorial. This is from the Zipper Cane Tutorial that is free on– and that you

00:15:08 –> 00:15:14 can check out. I just took a slice of it baked it on a curve and hung it from some another

00:15:14 –> 00:15:21 pair of rose ear wires. This is from the Checkered Paisley Cane Tutorial and you can see I use

00:15:21 –> 00:15:28 canes a ton of ton. People don’t understand how versatile using polymer clay canes are

00:15:28 –> 00:15:33 and just the sheer number of places that the canes are used in these tutorials will– or

00:15:33 –> 00:15:37 these earrings will prove that. You can use it for a lot of neat things. These earrings

00:15:37 –> 00:15:45 were done with a flower extrusion from an extruder disk and then baked and sliced while

00:15:45 –> 00:15:53 they were baked and has kind of a flower lei, Hawaiian flower lei kind of thing. These earrings

00:15:53 –> 00:15:57 are from the Shaded Rose Cane tutorial and they almost look like they’ve been hand-painted.

00:15:57 –> 00:16:08 These are from the– oh I believe this is from the Rolled Mokume Gane cane, I can’t

00:16:08 –> 00:16:14 quite remember but they are shaped like flowers they look really neat. This is from the Faux

00:16:14 –> 00:16:23 Batik Tutorial and these are from the Art Sheet Technique Tutorial. Here’s some neat

00:16:23 –> 00:16:31 little pumpkin earrings done from the Pumpkin Cane Tutorial and you’ll see over here, I

00:16:31 –> 00:16:37 have another pair of them I’m just in a larger size and they look quite different and you

00:16:37 –> 00:16:44 can use canes in lots of different sizes to get lots of different looks. This is from

00:16:44 –> 00:16:51 the Snowy Winter Cane. It’s all done with little tiny strips of extrusions of clay all

00:16:51 –> 00:16:59 built up like in a pointalist of the style. Here’s from the Easter Lilly Cane Tutorial.

00:16:59 –> 00:17:07 Here’s some Swirly Lentil Beads done in kind of a Tassel Style. This is a very fun way

00:17:07 –> 00:17:12 to use that Swirly Lentil Beads if you’ve gotten addicted to rolling those I have a

00:17:12 –> 00:17:19 tutorial on that as well, of course. This is from the Faux Rust Tutorial. We did a bracelet

00:17:19 –> 00:17:23 in the in the tutorial but these are leftover pieces to make a pair of earrings. Here’s

00:17:23 –> 00:17:32 a pair from the Blue Butterfly Cane Tutorial. You can make beautiful big pendants and all

00:17:32 –> 00:17:38 kinds of great stuff from that. There’s a few others on here you can see, the crocus

00:17:38 –> 00:17:47 bead beads and and all kinds of other neat ones. So I wanted to show you that. I hope

00:17:47 –> 00:17:54 you are inspired there are just unlimited as you can see, unlimited different styles

00:17:54 –> 00:17:59 that you can make with polymer clay with canes with blends with techniques. And I really

00:17:59 –> 00:18:04 want you to get hooked on it and because polymer clay is so light and easy to wear, they are

00:18:04 –> 00:18:10 the perfect thing to make polymer clay earrings with. Alright, so do let us know if you liked

00:18:10 –> 00:18:17 this video. If you’ve got a technique, a tutorial, a book, something that you would like me to

00:18:17 –> 00:18:23 review or demo for you, do leave your suggestions in the comment section below and don’t forget,

00:18:23 –> 00:18:29 we have absolutely tons of videos that will answer your polymer clay questions should

00:18:29 –> 00:18:34 you have them. Alright so we’ll see you next time and bye for now!

Somehow I missed this video and in going back over wanted to let everyone know about a little tip I use when making and working with wire for earrings, headpins, eyepins, etc; A lot of times I use the 3 loop decorative headpins for earrings and other things. It requires the same exact loop each time when using the needlenose pliers. I use to mark them with a sharpie but after doing 2 or three the marks wear off quite fast. I discovered if I use a piece of washi tape around each side I get perfect loops and it takes a long time to wear out the tape and it is easily removeable. I hope this helps some of you! :)

  • Hi Gay the link is in the comment above. It is in Vol-37, part of a set that has 4 tutorials in it. Thanks for the kind comments!

  • Hi Cindy, thank you for the video! I got a lot of new ideas from it. I was wondering where the Iris video is? I looked through the back issues and can’t find it. They are truly beautiful among all the others you have. I have learned so much from you and I can’t wait to see your new videos.

    Thank you!

  • Could I have the directions for the sweet pea and iris earrings? They are beautiful

  • Can I get the iris and sweet pea directions! They are gorgeous

  • I always enjoy everything you do. Thanks for all the knowledge you share!

  • Hi Cindy!
I wonder if you would tell me where to buy a bead cap I saw on your video.
It was a pr of e’rings that was a simple ball with bead caps (Purple? Blue?).
Do you know which ones I mean? It was a bead cap with leaves. I’ve been looking
everywhere for these. Who makes them, and where might I find them to purchase.
I love everything you do; you are an amazing and phenomenal woman?
    Thank you so much

    • Hi Marsha, I bought those caps years ago from a seller that was going out of business. They were sterling silver. These are not the same, but there are some similar ones at this Amazon link if that helps.

  • Kathay Iskrzycki says:

what size wire do you use for your home made earring wire where do you buy it? I love all the earrings you made….you are so talented

    • Hi Kathay, the best wire to to use for earwires is 20g or 21g half hard wire. Although I often use copper wire for my own use, there are some people whose ears turn green with copper. The best bet is Sterling silver, silver filled, gold filled, niobium or enamel coated wire (but make sure to only use high quality enamel wire, because cheap stuff chips). All this info is in the Vol-021-4 Handmade Earwire Tutorial.

Thank you for your quick response and your great lesson, so much detail…

  • Earrings are my favorite things to wear. I have short hair , so I can wear really long dangles. I have a ton of earrings made from your various tutes. Thanks for showing so many in your tute. Naming them brings happy memories………….grin

    • Thanks for saying that Patt! This video brought back lots of good memories for me too! :)

  • Hi Cindy! I’d love to see the Million Earring Design video. Please send me a link? Thanks so much!

    • Hi Marsha, this video is a collection of many different tutorials. Were there any particular designs that you liked? I could give you a link to it/them if I knew which one(s) you wanted.

  • Hi there
Loved the faux labradorite! Please post a link!
    Thanks- great video!

  • I’m only part way through the video Cindy – actually at the blue and turquoise flowers at 6:45 – and I am so taken with all the different types of earwires you’ve made and that beautiful wrapping on top of the flowers – that I’m already asking for a video on that!

BTW – think this is a marvelous video! I do love your earring cards. I make my own using old family photos – so the idea is almost the same. You’ve given me something to think about though with mine…

K – back to see what else knocks me off my chair.

    • Thank you Aims! I can certainly add that wire wrapping that I did on the top of the Iris Bead earrings, to the list of future tutorial ideas. I do love combining wire with polymer clay. They are a real good balance to each other. Glad you liked the earring cards too. I did make a video on that some time ago. Here’s a link… Jewelry Display Cards

  • I really enjoyed seeing so many earring designs one after another! Gave me many ideas on how to use the buckets of beads I have. I have been meaning to try some rose ear wires: love how they dress up a pair of earrings automatically.

The funny thing is, I really like making large dangly earrings but I wear itty bitty ones myself! So I like seeing ideas for stud style earrings that I can make.

Along the same lines as this video, maybe some necklace/pendant ideas would be helpful? I tend to go down the traditional path of using chain or beading wires for necklaces and glue on bails for pendants. It’d be cool to see some different stringing ideas and how to pick one for a certain style of bead. I’d love to learn some bail ideas as well: wire wrapped ones and maybe polymer clay bails? I know there are some innovative ideas in the back issues like the stamen bail, but seeing them all together would be great!

    • Thank you Krithika for the compliments and the suggestions! I knew it was something that I would appreciate seeing from another artist, and was hoping others would appreciate it too. Glad you did! Will have to put together similar collections like you suggested, and share them with you all down the road. Thanks again!
