Topics Covered In This Video:
- Several months ago, I did some test swatches of Pebeo Fantasy Paints on some baked samples of Souffle Polymer Clay to test for compatibility.
- Pebeo Fantasy paints are a solvent based paint with cool metallic effects.
- I tested Pebeo Fantasy – Prisme in Marina (blue) and Pebeo Fantasy – Moon in Apricot (orange).
- Sample sat for 5 months with no issues. So it appears to be safe for applying over polymer clay.
- When the paint dries, it disperses the metallic particles in unique patterns.
- The Pebeo Prisme paint pattern is more individual prism dots with a scale type look to it.
- The Pebeo Moon paint pattern has more of a streaky metallic swirl to it.
- Paints can be used together for interesting effects.
- The paints need to be mixed or shaken well before use, to distribute the metallic particles and chemicals.
- Clean up is with paint thinner, such as Low Odor Varsol.
- I use a bead piercing wire to drop paint onto the polymer clay surface.
- As the paint sits, you can watch the reaction happening before your eyes.
- Air dries in 2 hours. Full cure 10 hours or more.
- I found these paints at an art store here in Canada called Desarres, but they are available in many locations, including online.
00:00:03 –> 00:00:08 Hi guys, its Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor, and today in the PCT Test Lab, we are
00:00:08 –> 00:00:14 talking about Pebeo’s Fantasy Paints on Polymer Clay.
00:00:14 –> 00:00:22 Now several months ago, I did some test swatches of the Pebeo Paints, and these are an oil-based
00:00:22 –> 00:00:29 paint…or a solvent-based paint and they are really cool they have a really neat effect
00:00:29 –> 00:00:30 to them, a metallic effect.
00:00:30 –> 00:00:39 I’ve got the Prisme version in a color called Marina, and I’ve also got the Moon version
00:00:39 –> 00:00:44 in a color called Apricot, and each of their effects are a little bit different and I put
00:00:44 –> 00:00:50 them…about 5 months ago like I said, on a piece of baked Polymer Clay, this happens
00:00:50 –> 00:00:59 to be the Soufflé Polymer Clay by Polyform, but it doesn’t matter, I’ve tried it also
00:00:59 –> 00:01:01 on Premo as well.
00:01:01 –> 00:01:08 But, here’s what the effects look like, the paint, and I was testing it for compatibility,
00:01:08 –> 00:01:12 because this is solvent-based paint, some paints do not do well on Polymer Clay over
00:01:12 –> 00:01:18 time, they’ll eat away at the clay, and I was…had seen people try this paint, and
00:01:18 –> 00:01:23 I was curious on whether or not it was going to be compatible over the long term.
00:01:23 –> 00:01:31 And this piece has been sitting for 5 months, and there’s no compatibility issues, so I
00:01:31 –> 00:01:36 feel it is a safe product to use on Polymer Clay, and look at the neat effects that they
00:01:36 –> 00:01:37 give.
00:01:37 –> 00:01:45 The Prisme paint, gives us…when it dries, the paint sorta disperses the metallic particles
00:01:45 –> 00:01:50 in it, in a kind of a prism form, and so each time you use it, you’re gonna get a different
00:01:50 –> 00:01:53 effect in the little speckles.
00:01:53 –> 00:02:00 With the Moon version, it has a little bit different look, it’s more swirly, it’s not
00:02:00 –> 00:02:08 so Prismed, and it has a cool look, so what I’m gonna do is show you how it works and
00:02:08 –> 00:02:09 everything.
00:02:09 –> 00:02:15 I did a quick sample up of the 2 colors mixed together just before filming here, so it’s
00:02:15 –> 00:02:20 still wet, but it’s… you can see that you can work them together, and if the colors
00:02:20 –> 00:02:26 mix, you get kind of a blend of the 2 colors and of the different effects, it’s just very
00:02:26 –> 00:02:27 cool.
00:02:27 –> 00:02:32 So you have to shake it…both of them up really, really well, they’ve got the metallic
00:02:32 –> 00:02:38 particles sitting at the bottom, and you’re gonna wanna make sure that they’re well mixed,
00:02:38 –> 00:02:42 otherwise, it’s not gonna work the right way.
00:02:42 –> 00:02:49 And now…because its solvent based, you have to clean brushes…or any cleanup is done
00:02:49 –> 00:02:56 with a… like a Low Odor’s Varsol, it’s also known as a paint thinner, you can use something
00:02:56 –> 00:03:00 like that to clean up.
00:03:00 –> 00:03:07 And you can see the paint is really neat even just in the bottle, it has a real bubbled
00:03:07 –> 00:03:15 iridescent swirly look to it, and here’s this one, and I’m just gonna use like a little
00:03:15 –> 00:03:25 dropper…or a little wire that I’m gonna use as a dropper to put the paint on, and
00:03:25 –> 00:03:31 I’ll just show you, you can put it onto the surface, if you put it in different areas,
00:03:31 –> 00:03:38 you can get different looks, you can try swirling them together or mixing them, spreading them
00:03:38 –> 00:03:47 around, and as they sit, the chemicals in there start to mix and meld together and do
00:03:47 –> 00:03:51 some really fun little dances on the surface.
00:03:51 –> 00:04:00 I’m gonna put a little bit of Blue on, and this is the Prisme one, and it does some cool
00:04:00 –> 00:04:07 stuff too, but as they sit together…and you could really play with this in your mixing
00:04:07 –> 00:04:16 and your blending, they do some really neat things, I don’t know if the camera will be
00:04:16 –> 00:04:20 able to pick up on it, and because we’ve got it on…there’s quite a bit on here, it would
00:04:20 –> 00:04:25 swirl around too much if I tried to pick it up…too much of an angle, but as it sits
00:04:25 –> 00:04:32 and starts to dry, it just sorta separates and twists and spots and does all these cool
00:04:32 –> 00:04:33 things.
00:04:33 –> 00:04:40 So it takes about 2 hours to be air dried, so dried to the touch, but it takes about
00:04:40 –> 00:04:45 another 10 hours to completely cure, so you know, if you need it for something quick,
00:04:45 –> 00:04:48 you’re gonna need at least a day in advance.
00:04:48 –> 00:04:53 But it’s just the neatest thing, and I want…now that I know that it’s compatible in the long
00:04:53 –> 00:04:58 term, I’m gonna start playing with it and see what kind of neat ideas I can come up
00:04:58 –> 00:05:00 with.
00:05:00 –> 00:05:05 And I think you’re really gonna enjoy it, it comes in all kinds of different colors
00:05:05 –> 00:05:11 and different…the different effects, and you can find them in a lot of the local craft
00:05:11 –> 00:05:18 stores, I found mine at a chain store here in Canada called DeSerre’s, but you may be
00:05:18 –> 00:05:21 able to find them in other places as well.
00:05:21 –> 00:05:28 Alright, so I hope you enjoyed that, it’s a neat product, and I’d love to hear about
00:05:28 –> 00:05:30 it if you’ve tried it yourself.
00:05:30 –> 00:05:32 And if you did like this video, do let us know.
00:05:32 –> 00:05:38 And if you have any suggestions or other products you would like me to test in the Test Lab,

Pebeo Fantasy Paints on Polymer Clay Test Lab.
Hi Cindy,
Still working my way through the many tutorials and test labs. Just watched the above test lab as I have some of the various Pebeo multi media paints including Moon and Prisme and thought your video was great and your samples would make wonderful jewelry. I really enjoy all your videos.
Thanks.
Marie
So happy to hear you are enjoying all that you are learning here Marie! That is cool you already have some of these awesome paints. You’ll be able to make some fine jewelry with it!
Loved the video on Pebeo paint. My question was answered with Maureen’s comment.. Use baked clay…. Does it matter what color clay is used as a background? I’m wondering if using translucent clay would result with showing the effect on both sides of the finished products … Eg a pendant that could swival around?
Hi Natalie, translucent clay isn’t really all that see-through, unless it is incredibly thin, so I am not sure if it would give the effect that you are thinking it would. But it definitely would be worth trying and seeing what it would look like. I think it could look quite pretty, regardless whether you would see the full effect of the paint on both sides or not.
Hi Cindy! I started using the Pebeo paints off of Amazon several months ago and love them! I use the cheap disposable eye droppers to drop the paint onto my pieces and then just throw the eye droppers away. No messy clean up. :) Thanks for your great videos!
Great tip Aimee!
These paints seem very cool. Have you re-baked a piece after the paint dries? What about using on raw clay! Thank you … and Happy Holidays!
Hi Maureen, no I have not tried it on raw clay yet. Don’t really see the need to since it can be added after the project is finished. Not sure about how the paint will do when heated. Might give off some fumes?
I would love a test lab on this paint in the oven. Sometimes I think a little liquid kato would be a nice addition on it or maybe adding an element to it in clay that would require a curing session after the paint has set.
Just a little correction on the name of the store it’s Omer Deserres. Thank you!
Hi Hermine, here on the west coast it only goes by the name Deserres. I am guessing where you are they use the Omer in the name as well. You’re in Quebec right? Isn’t that where the company started out? It is not a very well known store out here. Just 3 stores for the whole province of BC. Luckily there is one in Surrey, very close to the Costco that I shop at every week, so it is easy to check out. The prices are a little cheaper than Michaels for a lot of things (but they don’t have the 40% off coupon) and they have some very interesting products. I do love the store though, it is a beautiful store!
Hello Cindy
Yesterday I was browsing older posts on the blog and I came across your post about a book that you and Doug were putting together on Polymer clay and art therapy. Whatever happened to the project? I’d be very interesting in buying it, working with clay helps me with my stress and anxiety disorder and I’d enjoy reading about others’ experiences. Thanks!
Karen
Hi Karen…glad to hear that you discovered that post about our Art Therapy Book Project.
We definitely still do have that on our list of things to complete. But as is typical with many book projects, they tend to get delegated down on the Totem Pole (so to speak), because of all the more pressing projects which seem to get in the way… like making sure that we continue to get all the videos published on time.
All that being said, we WILL eventually get it published. Over the years we have gathered so many very passionate stories on the topic. Polymer clay really is an incredible medium for anyone coping with many health issues or stress disorders.
Hi Doug
Super, I am happy to know that the book is going to be done eventually. I’ll be on the look out here for updates. Thanks!
Karen
Hi, Cindy
I have been wondering about these paints for awhile. They are also available at Hobby Lobby, which has a 40% coupon weekly also. Can’t wait to try them.
I did a little checking around and Michaels has the Pebeo Fantasy Moon Paints in the Discovery Set of 6 for $24.95 but with a 40% off it would only be $14.97 per set. If you can’t get to a Michaels, Fire Mountain Gems has the set for $19.95 plus shipping. Now I am doing my Happy Dance!!
Great tip Dixie! Thanks!
Thanks for hunting that deal down Dixie Ann!
Don’t know why all those question marks happened! When I said what you do makes me smile it wasn’t at all meant to be questionable.
Hi Cindy,
I love your test lab items ( still loving the blue glasses too)This paint wasn’t even on my radar, so thank you for the introduction.!
I’d love to see you try out the Czextruder as a demo. It is more expensive than most extruders, but should last forever, and it’d be great to see you put it through its paces. Just a thought. It would also be great to have more detailed tips on the Jool Tool. I’m having some difficulty getting it to do what you do so effortlessly. By the way Everything you do makes me smile????
Why all the question marks???? LOL Just teasing! You probably just tried to put in an emotion and the text box turned it into some question marks instead. I actually have a Lucy Clay Czextruder on its way for review. You’ll get to see it in the new year. Thanks for your kind comments!
Hi Cindy, just watched a video on this paint last week and was so impressed with it’s properties and the beautiful designs it created. I didn’t know you needed a paint remover to clean up so thanks so much for that tip. I have been looking into purchasing some of this but right now it’s not in my budget as it is rather an expensive paint. It is on my wishlist though and I am so grateful for your testing it as when I do get it, I will be comfortable knowing it is compatible with PC.
