There’s a cute story about this photograph of a VERY fresh Tiger Prawn…
You see… back in mid-February, there came a knock on our front door. It was my Dad, and he asked if we would like some fresh crab and prawns for dinner? I answered, “Yes!” Doug and Willow are huge fans of anything seafood related. Fisher is only moderately interested. Me on the other hand… not so much. I guess all those years as a Fisherman’s Daughter kind of took the appeal out of seafood for my taste buds.
Anyway… Dad said, “Come out to the van with a pot and a lid,” … which I thought was a little ominous, but I obeyed. He opened the cooler and right there were some lively Tiger Prawns flipping around in front of me, and a couple of snappy Dungeness Crabs!
Well, it’s not everyday you get live shellfish delivered to your front door! You can’t get fresher than that! Even I might be interested in having some for dinner.
As it turns out, one of my Dad’s fishing buddies had taken him out that afternoon to check on some traps. Being out on the ocean will always be special for my Dad. He just recently sold his commercial fishing boat and officially retired from a career that he’d been doing for over 3 decades. That picture below is (was) his boat… The Royal Quest…
Now since you will never see a more handsome Tiger Prawn than one that is still actually walking around, Doug thought this was the perfect opportunity to snap some photos for this color palette.
Tiger Prawn is a deep rust red found in the striped shell of this oceanic crustacean. Shrimp is the pink shrimp color of the body of this beady-eyed creature. Dock is the soft gray of the driftwood bench where this Prawn hung out for the photo shoot. And Grilled is the charcoal color of the backdrop of this photo, and the color of the grill marks that came later when the meal was prepared :)

I don’t have too many colors mixed up as yet, but am going to do as many of the recipes as possible and make myself the color samples to attach to the cards. That will make it so much easier to choose my colors. Warm regards.

I’m still new at mixing colors. I have a few colors to work with and then I see another one in the recipe I don’t have, so that’s frustrating when I am ready to mix my colors for a bead. Some day I will have all the basic ones. Thanks for the recipe it helps so much.

I am very new to polymer clay and one of the scariest things to me was mixing my own colors. Your recipes have really spelled it out for me… and makes me less intimidated to try it, now I have the gusto to give it a go and I am really enthused about it. My husband wants to know if you give cooking lessons too… since I am so excited about clay recipes now, he wants me to be this excited about being in the kitchen. Hugs.

funny how your story brought back memories to all of us….it’s true we are all different but thru your colors we stand on the same ground….
I live far, so far from the sea….i was borne in the Mediterranean sea…have so many good memory’s, and i miss it so much…
I agree whit Doreen Neilley and her idea for a color pallet and to honor your Dad’s life on the sea he loves so much.

Lovely note about your Dad being a fisherman. You are probably already working on it :) but a palette called the Royal Quest with, maybe, the amber coloured buoy, the deep red-brown timber around the top of the cabin, the palest blue of the “box” on top of the cabin, and the deep gray-blue of the water below the boat would be a lovely way to honour your Dad’s lifetime as a fisherman.
Where do i go to understand how your recipes work? Are they all equal parts of clay? Thank you for your help. Love your videos.

The color recipes are on the cards that you can download from my email newsletters which get sent out each Friday.
My Grandad was a fishmonger and on Wednesday afternoons I would run to the end of the road to meet the bus, knowing ” Gramps” had closed his shop (Wednesday were early closing day) I must have been about five years old as remember I had to stand on a kitchen stool while he showed me how to dress a Crab, take the vein from a Tiger Prawn and fillet a fish. One of his favourite fishy snacks was ” jellied eels.” Ugg.
This is a real Cockney dish but I hated that Gramps had to cut their heads off while they were still wriggling so I would never eat them.
Many years later when I married a Cockney lad he said “Just try some”. Well I found I really liked them, especially when Paul had prepared them himself for me, but stayed out of the kitchen until he had finished.
Isn’t it funny how colors bring back different memories for us all. Good palette, good memories……..cheers Cindy..xx
Oh Elaine, the way you write I could totally picture being that little girl standing on a stool watching my grandpa cleaning shellfish! My stories as a little girl with my dad are quite similar to yours by the sounds of it. Our accents will be very different but our souls are the same! :)
As a girl from the Midwest, never able to have fresh seafood as you all on the coasts, I can honestly say I have never eaten a prawn unless another name for it is shrimp! The colors of this palatte look absolutely delicious. It just makes me downright hungry for stuffed crab with shrimp, one of the best dishes served in my favorite restaurant. I am really going to enjoy working with these colors.
Hi Dixie Ann, you should have seen this guy, he was huge! About the length of my hand from head to tail. This size would probably cost about $4 a piece and that is out here on the coast… closer to a million I’d think if it were shipped to the Midwest! ;)
Cindy, can you believe it is almost May? Our season for fresh local shellfish here on the East Coast is unfortunately quite short, so we eat plenty while we can :) Our local lobster fisherman go out in May… can’t wait :)
