Topics Covered In This Video:
- Doing a Michaels Craft Haul… where people buy a bunch of craft supplies and dump them out for everyone to see what they got!
- I figured out when to get the best deals at craft stores…
- In January the craft industry has an event called CHA (Craft and Hobby Association) Conference where new products are introduced.
- In March and April, spaces start clearing on the shelves and the new products start to show up in the stores.
- In June and July, they clear out everything that they will no longer be carrying at huge discounts.
- The stuff I bought was 70% Off the lowest ticketed price… prices that were already marked down for clearance.
- If you’re not picky, you can get a tremendous buy on many craft supplies and jewelry making materials.
- Types of things I got in this craft haul were, Martha Stewart Paints, Copic markers, Silver plated findings, chain, Industrial Chic findings, gears, epoxy clay, crystal beads, lockets, bead caps, push pins, bails, metal stamps, etc. etc.
- So watch your favorite store for when they start clearing out last season's goods, and get some of these great deals yourself!
00:00:03 –> 00:00:07 Hi guys, its Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor, and today’s Studio Tip, I’m doing
00:00:07 –> 00:00:11 one of those craft hauls…you know the Michaels craft hauls… that everybody buys a bunch
00:00:11 –> 00:00:13 of stuff and then they dump the stuff all over and show you?
00:00:13 –> 00:00:21 Well I wanted to do one of those and… because I figured out a thing over the last few years,
00:00:21 –> 00:00:27 that there’s a real special time of the year that you can get great deals at places
00:00:27 –> 00:00:28 like Michaels.
00:00:28 –> 00:00:34 Now, it is…well we’re filming in June but…or in July, but usually it’s around
00:00:34 –> 00:00:39 the last couple of weeks in June and early July.
00:00:39 –> 00:00:44 And what happens is, is that the new stuff comes in…gets launched, all the new products
00:00:44 –> 00:00:53 for the year get launched at the CHA conference down in California, and that’s in January
00:00:53 –> 00:00:58 sometime, then all the products that the different stores wanna carry start showing up in the
00:00:58 –> 00:01:06 stores around March, April, May, and then they need to find room for that stuff so they
00:01:06 –> 00:01:08 start clearing out.
00:01:08 –> 00:01:13 And what happens is…now I’ve got this bag of supplies here, all kinds of different
00:01:13 –> 00:01:21 random jewelry supplies, and I bought this whole bag of supplies for about $21, which
00:01:21 –> 00:01:27 in Canada, that’s a big deal, and the reason for that is because they’re trying to find
00:01:27 –> 00:01:33 space or their changing products, and I’ve got all sorts of treasures here.
00:01:33 –> 00:01:41 What they have is usually a sale where they’ll put 70% off of the lowest ticket price of
00:01:41 –> 00:01:47 all of the blue stickers, and that’s what I found… in this particular sale it was,
00:01:47 –> 00:01:56 and so things that were normally $5 I was getting for about 70% off of a $1.49, so I
00:01:56 –> 00:02:00 don’t know whatever that is, it’s around 50, 60 cents something like that.
00:02:00 –> 00:02:06 And so, there’s products here like Martha Stewart’s jewelry products, they’re…she’s
00:02:06 –> 00:02:13 getting out of that particular line, so this stuff was in the 40 to 50 cents kinda range.
00:02:13 –> 00:02:21 There’s the epoxy clay, it was closer to $6 or something, and I got it for under a
00:02:21 –> 00:02:22 buck.
00:02:22 –> 00:02:29 There’s chain, and this stuff was more in the $10 range and I got for around the $1
00:02:29 –> 00:02:30 something range.
00:02:30 –> 00:02:38 Look at this deal here, these are Copic markers, the wide ones, these are expensive, they’re
00:02:38 –> 00:02:45 about $8 a pen and I got these for about 60 cents each, they didn’t have too many of
00:02:45 –> 00:02:50 those, probably ‘cause wise people picked them up already, so I got a couple of those.
00:02:50 –> 00:03:01 There’s…oh I don’t know, push pin picture things, some little cogs, more of these silver
00:03:01 –> 00:03:09 plated findings, these were $5 down to 60 cents, here’s some more chain.
00:03:09 –> 00:03:14 I’m just really excited about this kinda thing and I wanted to let you in on that secret.
00:03:14 –> 00:03:20 So it may or may not be too late now, it’s starting to… the supplies are starting to
00:03:20 –> 00:03:26 dwindle, but every year, watch for the season when they start to clear the shelves off,
00:03:26 –> 00:03:31 and it’s usually around June or July, and stuff just goes on for dirt cheap.
00:03:31 –> 00:03:38 And if you’re an artist or jewelry maker, you can find great supplies…as long as you
00:03:38 –> 00:03:43 aren’t looking for anything specific, and you’re more looking for general items, you
00:03:43 –> 00:03:45 can get a great, great deal.
00:03:45 –> 00:03:49 So I hope you enjoyed that, and if you liked that, let us know.
00:03:49 –> 00:03:55 And if you have any comments or suggestions for future videos, let me know about that.
00:03:55 –> 00:04:00 And if you have any challenges, or things that you’d like me to demo for you that
00:04:00 –> 00:04:03 you’re having trouble figuring out, let me know about that too, alright?
00:04:03 –> 00:04:05 So we’ll see you next time and bye for now.

Great to know. We have had Michaels in Quebec for a shorter time than the rest of Canada so that was a very good info. Since they sell their stuff much higher than Chaton Beads where I usually go, I will keep it in mind.
Allways wonderful to learn things here.
Cindy, can I ask about your lamp? Is it a clip-on or is it free standing? I find I need brighter light and your lamp looks like it would do the trick. Thanks. Janet
Hi Janet, that is just an old clamp on office lamp that I put a full spectrum ‘grow light’ into. Much cheaper than the large Ott lights available out there!
Thanks Cindy on the heads up on Michaels discounts. I went over to ours to check things out after watching your video and lo and behold they had an unadvertised special on Sculpey clay and I was able to pick up all the colors I was out of on Sale and got everything else at 40% off with their big storage clearance sale.
Um…I haven’t bought clay in a very long while, so when did Michaels stop selling Premo? All they had today was Sculpey III and their own store brand.
Hi Jill, my Michaels still carries Premo. Maybe it is something that has only been removed from your particular store? Why don’t you ask the staff there. Maybe they will still bring in some for you? Couldn’t hurt to ask.
Thanks, Cindy. I will ask them.
This started last year with extra markdowns. We, employees, got corp to reduce clearance merchandise faster so we didn’t have to pack up so much to make room for the Christmas season. Like you said, if your not picky, you can get some real bargains. You are lucky to try the epoxy clay. My store never got it in. I would have liked to know how that clay worked. Her molds are cool. They work well with polymer clay. So, people, hurry and look for treasures! They will be packed up soon till after Christmas.
The Martha Epoxy clay is great… pretty pricey when it was regular price, but worth it on sale. Been hesitant to talk about it much because it is no longer available… but I definitely like it!
I figured as much. Not sure about any of the epoxy clays. Seems like a good idea but I’m not seeing a big need for it. Got a big clay-date with my friend’s 12 year old daughter tomorrow! We will be having a ball playing with our clay!
Great tip! I am logging out and heading for Michaels now.
Just got back with a Michaels haul of my own. The clearance items are on the endcaps. I got a lot of spacer beads and Martha Stewart products like the double epoxy clay and jewelry glaze. Also all the beads are 50% off. Woo hoo!
Cindy, what a haul!!! I would have been dancing out to my car, lol. Thank you so much for this cost saving tip!
