In this video, I review the Glass Nail Files which the Mont Bleu company recently sent to me from the Czech Republic.

I will also share with you a neat idea for using polymer clay to give your nail files a unique decorative look.

I have seen glass fingernail files covered with polymer clay, and have always wanted to make some for myself. So when the opportunity came up to review these Mont Bleu Glass Nail Files, naturally I was interested.

Well, the files they sent were stunning! Painted in a lovely blue to pink gradient with pretty swirls of Pink and Purple, hand decorated genuine Swarovski Crystals. My plan was to originally add polymer clay to several of the sample files. But quite honestly, the Swarovski crystal embellishments were so pretty, I could only bring myself to covering just one of the files… using Polyform’s Sculpey Souffle polymer clay.

Perhaps in the future Mont Bleu will send me some of their plain glass files, so I can do a more in depth step-by-step, polymer clay tutorial. I just don’t want to cover up any more of those beautiful Swarovski Crystals ;-)

In the remainder of the video, I give tips and tricks for covering any glass nail file with polymer clay… as well as tips for adding your cane slices. Important baking information is also covered, so that you can make beautifully handmade polymer clay glass nail files too!

00:00:03 –> 00:00:08 Hi guys, its Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor, and today’s PcT Product Demo, I’m gonna

00:00:08 –> 00:00:15 do a review of Mont Bleu Glass Nail Files, and I’m gonna share with you a cool idea on

00:00:15 –> 00:00:23 how to make Polymer Clay covered glass nail files, so this is kind of a combo video.

00:00:23 –> 00:00:29 And for a long time, I wanted to make Polymer Clay covered nail files, glass nail files

00:00:29 –> 00:00:35 are the perfect medium for putting Polymer Clay on and they make a really, really beautiful

00:00:35 –> 00:00:38 gift, and you can do them in any kind of style.

00:00:38 –> 00:00:44 So when Mont Bleu offered to send me some samples of their glass nail files, I was really

00:00:44 –> 00:00:50 excited about it, ‘cause finally I would get a chance to try Polymer Clay on it, and

00:00:50 –> 00:00:55 so then they sent me these absolutely stunning ones, and I felt a little guilty about covering

00:00:55 –> 00:01:02 up the crystals with the Polymer Clay, but I did do one sample of it, but I’ll explain

00:01:02 –> 00:01:07 the process of covering a glass nail file in a bit.

00:01:07 –> 00:01:14 So here are the nail files from Mont Bleu, they are absolutely beautiful, they are a

00:01:14 –> 00:01:21 company that comes out of the city of Prague in the Czech Republic, and they put this post

00:01:21 –> 00:01:29 card in there of Prague which is a nice touch and you can see their beautiful city, and

00:01:29 –> 00:01:38 the nail files that they make are really nice quality, they’ve got, these ones here are

00:01:38 –> 00:01:43 one of their special ones, they’ve got lots and lots of different designs, and some plain

00:01:43 –> 00:01:48 ones which would be more suited for covering in Polymer Clay, but they have them in several

00:01:48 –> 00:01:51 sizes and styles.

00:01:51 –> 00:02:01 Now these ones have a sticker on there that is the authenticity of…they have real Swarovski

00:02:01 –> 00:02:07 crystals on here, and they put them all on there, they’re hand decorated with the crystals.

00:02:07 –> 00:02:13 They have some with lots of different colors, some that are hand painted, some that are

00:02:13 –> 00:02:20 plain like I was saying, and lots of different sizes… or these three sizes anyways.

00:02:20 –> 00:02:26 And this one here is the large one and it is about just over…oh about 7 1/2 inches

00:02:26 –> 00:02:31 long, it’s a beautiful size.

00:02:31 –> 00:02:40 The medium one here has a pointed tip on it, and it is about just over 5 inches, about

00:02:40 –> 00:02:45 5 1/4 inches, and then the small one here, which also has a pointed tip for cleaning

00:02:45 –> 00:02:52 under your nails and things with it, that one is about 3 1/2 inches, and they have these

00:02:52 –> 00:02:56 nice little packages that they slide into to protect them, so if you put them in your

00:02:56 –> 00:03:00 purse and whatever, they’re protected.

00:03:00 –> 00:03:09 But the beautiful thing about glass nail files is their surface, now they do…

00:03:09 –> 00:03:14 I don’t know how they get this etched surface on there, whether it’s chemical or like with

00:03:14 –> 00:03:20 sand blasting or whatever they do but it has an etched surface to it, so when you file

00:03:20 –> 00:03:24 your nails with it…and ignore my nails please, I’ve been doing a lot of gardening and stuff,

00:03:24 –> 00:03:28 so they’re kinda in rough shape, but when you file your nails with it, it has a really

00:03:28 –> 00:03:33 smooth surface to it, it doesn’t have the grains in it, like a metal nail file will

00:03:33 –> 00:03:40 have, or even like a diamond nail file.

00:03:40 –> 00:03:44 And the nice thing about glass is that you can sterilize them, so if you’re using them

00:03:44 –> 00:03:50 in like a commercial situation or different people are using the nail files, you can wash

00:03:50 –> 00:03:55 them and sterilize them with rubbing alcohol or however you wanna do that.

00:03:55 –> 00:03:59 But glass also is a great one for covering in Polymer Clay, and you can see on places

00:03:59 –> 00:04:07 like Etsy, where people are selling their handmade Polymer Clay glass files and they

00:04:07 –> 00:04:12 are really beautiful, you can do them in any style you like.

00:04:12 –> 00:04:15 This one I decided to do in…

00:04:15 –> 00:04:22 I covered it with one of the Mod canes that we made a little while ago in a video, I’ll

00:04:22 –> 00:04:28 just show you some samples of the slices here, and this particular cane was made with some

00:04:28 –> 00:04:30 Soufflé clay…

00:04:30 –> 00:04:38 Sculpey Soufflé Clay, and it was a great style to put on these nail files.

00:04:38 –> 00:04:45 Now, they have…I’ve got the site over here for you…oh, and when you…if you do check

00:04:45 –> 00:04:52 out their site, their site is design-glassware.com, but we’re gonna have a coupon code for 20%

00:04:52 –> 00:04:59 off, so that will be on our website…on our blog at polymerclaytutor.com, so you’ll wanna

00:04:59 –> 00:05:05 check that out if you’re interested in buying these, but like I said, they have some plain

00:05:05 –> 00:05:12 ones in clear, they also have different colors and all kinds of different styles, you can

00:05:12 –> 00:05:16 get them with crystals and lots of things, so you’ll wanna check that out.

00:05:16 –> 00:05:24 But their prices are really good, it’s in Euros, and they do ship from the Czech Republic,

00:05:24 –> 00:05:33 but right now…so the small nail file is about 4 dollars, or 4 Euros which currently

00:05:33 –> 00:05:39 for American prices that’s just over $4 and Canadian prices that’s just over $5, so that’s

00:05:39 –> 00:05:42 a very good price.

00:05:42 –> 00:05:48 And if you do decide to cover them in Polymer Clay, it is really quite easy to do.

00:05:48 –> 00:05:56 Now, whenever you cover anything glass in Polymer Clay, you want to make sure that the

00:05:56 –> 00:06:03 glass is going to be able to be oven safe, so you wanna test it first, so what I did

00:06:03 –> 00:06:11 was I took one of the…I had two of these in this size here, I took this and put it

00:06:11 –> 00:06:16 into the oven… you always wanna start with a cold oven first, because you don’t wanna

00:06:16 –> 00:06:26 thermal shock your glass, so I put it in the oven, cold first, and put it… let the temperature

00:06:26 –> 00:06:30 rise up to the temperature I was gonna be baking the Polymer Clay at, and Soufflé Clay

00:06:30 –> 00:06:37 bakes at 275F which is the same as Premo!, so I let it get up to the 275F, let it sit

00:06:37 –> 00:06:41 there for about 15 minutes, and then let it cool down.

00:06:41 –> 00:06:46 That way I could see if it was gonna be able to handle the heat, you always want to let

00:06:46 –> 00:06:51 glass cool down right down till it’s cold, you don’t wanna move it so you leave it in

00:06:51 –> 00:06:55 the oven, turn the oven off and then let it cool down before touching it so that you’re

00:06:55 –> 00:06:59 not letting it break or shocking it.

00:06:59 –> 00:07:05 So once I tested it to make sure it could handle the heat…oh, and I actually peeled

00:07:05 –> 00:07:10 off the little sticker first before I did that, I don’t know if the plain ones…the

00:07:10 –> 00:07:15 plain ones probably don’t have a sticker on there, that’s just to show the authenticity

00:07:15 –> 00:07:22 for these crystals, but…so, and also you wouldn’t be covering up these beautiful crystals

00:07:22 –> 00:07:25 if you bought the plain ones, or even the painted ones.

00:07:25 –> 00:07:31 But, what I did next was…because they had the crystals on there, I built up a little

00:07:31 –> 00:07:37 bit of a layer first, but I covered it in scrap Polymer Clay first, so that I could

00:07:37 –> 00:07:44 have a nice base and shape it properly before I put my canes on it.

00:07:44 –> 00:07:51 So once I wrapped it in the scrap Polymer Clay, I trimmed it off and I put it in the

00:07:51 –> 00:07:58 oven and baked it for about 30 minutes to get a good solid base, same rule applies,

00:07:58 –> 00:08:03 so I put it in the oven cold, let it get full temperature, baked it for 30 minutes and then

00:08:03 –> 00:08:06 let it cool down.

00:08:06 –> 00:08:10 Then after I brought it out of the oven… pretend this is in a muddy color ‘cause

00:08:10 –> 00:08:15 that’s what I used, some scrap clay, I sanded it and got a nice shape to it, so that I would

00:08:15 –> 00:08:19 have a good base for putting my cane slices on.

00:08:19 –> 00:08:25 And this is a good way to go about it, because when you…whenever you put a handle on something,

00:08:25 –> 00:08:29 if you’ve got a base that’s baked on it first and you’ve shaped it first, then it’s a

00:08:29 –> 00:08:35 lot easier to put your cane slices on, if you were to just put raw clay and then your

00:08:35 –> 00:08:41 cane slices, it would be difficult to get a really nice shape without doing a lot of

00:08:41 –> 00:08:45 sanding and possibly removing your cane slice.

00:08:45 –> 00:08:52 So once my base was baked, I rubbed the base with a little bit of Sculpey Bake & Bond and

00:08:52 –> 00:08:58 I’ve talked about this before, but you just… it’s like liquid Sculpey, you could use the

00:08:58 –> 00:09:02 liquid Sculpey, but the Bake & Bond has some little fibers in it or something that makes

00:09:02 –> 00:09:07 it a little bit more like a glue and it works beautifully between baked clay and raw clay,

00:09:07 –> 00:09:14 so I rubbed it down with the…the baked base with the Bake & Bond, and then I put the slices

00:09:14 –> 00:09:19 of the Mod cane on there, and you can see here’s some slices here.

00:09:19 –> 00:09:26 Whenever I used a cane slice for a project or a veneer or anything like that, I make

00:09:26 –> 00:09:33 sure that the slice is quite thick, around at least a millimeter or two, not paper thin,

00:09:33 –> 00:09:40 because that gives me a lot more room for sanding later, if you make super, super thin

00:09:40 –> 00:09:45 slices, a lot of people try to get as much mileage out of their cane as possible, but

00:09:45 –> 00:09:50 then you run into the trouble of not being able to sand it back, and if you’ve got a

00:09:50 –> 00:09:55 thick slice like that, you can sand it back without worrying about wearing right through

00:09:55 –> 00:09:56 it.

00:09:56 –> 00:10:04 So I wrapped it around the base, I used all my slices, connected them up, trimmed it off…and

00:10:04 –> 00:10:10 it was a little tricky in these corners here, but I did the best I could there, and then

00:10:10 –> 00:10:16 wrapped it and baked it again, and this time I baked it for a full hour just to make sure

00:10:16 –> 00:10:22 that this was really tough, because you’re gonna be using this as a utilitarian type

00:10:22 –> 00:10:28 thing you wanna make sure that it is really tough and not gonna chip or break on you,

00:10:28 –> 00:10:36 so…the Polymer I mean, so I baked it, you know, from cold yet again, and baked it, but

00:10:36 –> 00:10:43 this time I made sure to bake it within the pan with a lid on it, so that the colors of

00:10:43 –> 00:10:51 the cane weren’t getting discolored or anything, they were protected from the heat of the elements…and

00:10:51 –> 00:10:56 I always bake it that way, but I just thought I’d mention that.

00:10:56 –> 00:11:03 And then we sanded and buffed it afterwards, now Soufflé Clay has kind of a matte suede

00:11:03 –> 00:11:09 type finish to it, so it doesn’t get a high shine if you sand and buff it but it really

00:11:09 –> 00:11:11 has a beautiful feel to it.

00:11:11 –> 00:11:17 So I think that what I’m gonna wanna do is get myself a bunch of the plain ones, or I

00:11:17 –> 00:11:18 could go…

00:11:18 –> 00:11:22 I do like the… with the little bit of color there, but the plain ones are even a better

00:11:22 –> 00:11:28 deal, get a bunch of them and start maybe make a tutorial on doing some more… like

00:11:28 –> 00:11:34 a proper in-depth tutorial, and with covering them in Polymer Clay.

00:11:34 –> 00:11:40 So I hope you enjoyed that, like I said, if you’re interested in picking up some of these

00:11:40 –> 00:11:46 glass nail files, the quality is beautiful, they do a beautiful job, they sent them in

00:11:46 –> 00:11:52 a nice packaging, whether you get the plain ones or the fancy ones, they’re beautiful.

00:11:52 –> 00:12:02 And you’ll wanna go to our site at www.polymerclaytutor.com to get the coupon code for your 20% off.

00:12:02 –> 00:12:11 And so, I hope you liked that, and that you got some neat ideas from it, if you did like

00:12:11 –> 00:12:12 that, let us know.

00:12:12 –> 00:12:17 And also, we’ve got lots and lots and lots of videos on lots of different subjects to

00:12:17 –> 00:12:22 do with Polymer Clay, so make sure to check through them and see if we’ve got the answers

00:12:22 –> 00:12:27 that you are looking for, for working with Polymer Clay, and if not, leave a suggestion

00:12:27 –> 00:12:32 in the comment section below and maybe we can make a video for you in the future, alright? So

00:12:32 –> 00:12:35 we’ll see you next time and bye for now.

  • Laurie Spar says:

    Hi Cindy,
Thanks for the fun tutorial on glass files. What a neat idea! I bought one at a craft show with a plastic design; yours are so much nicer and make great gifts. My one question: Since you tested the files in the oven before applying clay and baking, is it necessary for me to also test them beforehand? Thanks for your help.
    Laurie

    • Hi Laurie, if you are buying your Glass Files from Mont Bleu than I wouldn’t worry about testing them yourself, since I am convinced their quality of glass throughout their lines will handle the baking. But if you are buying them anywhere else, I would go ahead and test them just in case.

  • Dixie Ann says:

Hi Cindy, beautiful nail files so glad you were able to show us this product.
I ordered some using the 20% off code and it basically takes care of the shipping charges which is a huge help. For the quality, the price is very low which really surprised me. The nice thing about these files is that not only will they make a terrific gift but also will last a lot longer than the traditional files you buy at Wal-mart or drug stores. Mont Bleu is well known for it’s superior quality. I have owned several of their other products.

  • For those interested, Mont Blue sells nail files that are not embellished with crystals, too. Yay!

  • Krithika P says:

Quick FYI, the link to Mont Bleu Design Glassware took me to the Kor Tools website :)

    • Oops… my mistake. The link above in the article (right underneath the video), is all fixed now, and will take you to the correct site ftor Mont Bleu Glass Nail Files. Thanks for catching that Krithika.
