In this video, I will show you the results of my tests of applying Americana Chalky Finish Paint onto polymer clay.
I painted a stamped and rolled polymer clay bead with the Americana Chalky Finish many months ago, and found there to be no compatibility issues between the paint and the polymer. No stickiness, discoloring or flaking.
The very thick water based chalk paint is very opaque, has an ultra-matte finish and is an excellent paint for doing antique finishes. Its thick consistency is similar to a thick Gesso paint and reminds me of a mixture of Acrylic Paint and Drywall Compound. It comes in lots of colors and is available in several retail and online locations, including Michaels.
00:00:03 –> 00:00:08 Hi guys, its Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor, and today’s PcT Product Demo, we’re
00:00:03 –> 00:00:07 Hi guys, its Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor, and today in the PcT Test Lab, we are
00:00:07 –> 00:00:14 going to talk about Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint on Polymer Clay.
00:00:14 –> 00:00:19 Now as you know… or you may not know, I like to test different products on Polymer
00:00:19 –> 00:00:25 Clay to see if they are compatible, so that we can use them in future projects, and I
00:00:25 –> 00:00:31 wanted to test out this Americana Chalky Finish because chalk paint is super popular these
00:00:31 –> 00:00:33 days.
00:00:33 –> 00:00:42 And I did that, I put some onto this bead many, many months ago and it is very compatible,
00:00:42 –> 00:00:47 there’s no stickiness, there is no issues with it at all which is great.
00:00:47 –> 00:00:51 So I’ll just show you a little bit about the paint, and if you’re wondering what this is
00:00:51 –> 00:01:00 all about, this is actually a stamped bead and then I’ve put…or a Polymer Clay bead
00:01:00 –> 00:01:04 that I’ve put on to a hammered Copper bookmark, and actually that’s from a tutorial that we
00:01:04 –> 00:01:11 did a long, long time ago, and anyways, I’ll show you this paint.
00:01:11 –> 00:01:19 It is a very interesting paint, what it reminds me of is…if you’re familiar with art paints
00:01:19 –> 00:01:26 at all, if you’re familiar with a kind of a primer based paint called Gesso, it’s very
00:01:26 –> 00:01:38 much like Gesso, it is…if I could describe it, it would be acrylic paint mixed with drywall
00:01:38 –> 00:01:48 putty…in fact who knows, it could be that…that very same thing, it’s just a very chalky acrylic
00:01:48 –> 00:01:56 water based paint that is very, very thick and dries to a super matte finish, which…you
00:01:56 –> 00:02:02 know, where the chalkiness comes from, it’s quite durable and it’s just really a great
00:02:02 –> 00:02:05 look, it has a very antique look…finish to it.
00:02:05 –> 00:02:09 I grabbed a couple of baked samples of Polymer Clay…these are both Premo!
00:02:09 –> 00:02:16 Clay, I just grabbed them, I have a big bag of miscellaneous flat pieces of baked pieces,
00:02:16 –> 00:02:22 and I wanted to show you the difference in the opacity and things when it’s on either
00:02:22 –> 00:02:29 a light color or a dark color, and I’ll just show you how this looks.
00:02:29 –> 00:02:36 It goes on quite opaque and quite thick, you could use it…you know you could paint designs
00:02:36 –> 00:02:43 or cover a piece completely in it, on my bead sample, I used it as an antiquing medium,
00:02:43 –> 00:02:48 here it is on Black, and you can see it’s quite opaque, and on White.
00:02:48 –> 00:02:55 On something like this… like on one of these stamped rolled beads, if you’ve never made
00:02:55 –> 00:02:59 one of these kinda rolled beads before, it’s basically just a long strip of… they make
00:02:59 –> 00:03:04 them in paper all the time, but it’s just a long, triangular strip that you roll up
00:03:04 –> 00:03:09 from the wide end, and then you end up with this tapered bead and this one I pre-stamped
00:03:09 –> 00:03:15 before I cut it and rolled it, and so it has a lot of neat texture, well you can use a
00:03:15 –> 00:03:20 paint like this as an antiquing medium and in fact, it really changes the look of this
00:03:20 –> 00:03:27 whole bead, it makes it look a little bit more like ceramic, I’m just gonna paint it
00:03:27 –> 00:03:36 right in the whole… all the little crevices and then we’ll wipe it off in a sec here.
00:03:36 –> 00:03:42 They come in quite a few colors, I picked up this can at…or this little jug of it
00:03:42 –> 00:03:52 at Michaels, it’s probably all over the place, I’m guessing that pretty much all of the formulas
00:03:52 –> 00:03:57 that are out there will be compatible, but of course, you always wanna test first…
00:03:57 –> 00:04:04 so I’ll just clean up my brush, don’t want it to dry in there, and then, you just wanna
00:04:04 –> 00:04:10 wipe it off, you could use a damp cloth and just wipe it off, and then just let it sit
00:04:10 –> 00:04:11 in all the little crevices.
00:04:11 –> 00:04:20 And because it’s a matte finish, it will have a very… it’ll give it a lot of depth to
00:04:20 –> 00:04:26 the texture, and see how much… this was very bright, this is more muted and it has
00:04:26 –> 00:04:27 quite a cool look to it.
00:04:27 –> 00:04:32 And in fact I had found… the reason why I wanted to test it on one of these beads
00:04:32 –> 00:04:40 is I had found some, I believe this is Sesame Jade, and I found a little Sesame Jade bead
00:04:40 –> 00:04:46 and it was just the right color, it was sitting beside my new container of chalk paint and
00:04:46 –> 00:04:51 I thought this would make quite a nice little bookmark, so I did that.
00:04:51 –> 00:04:58 So I hope you enjoyed that information, if you did, you might wanna try out this paint
00:04:58 –> 00:05:05 sometime on your Polymer Clay, and if it was helpful for you, do let us know.
00:05:05 –> 00:05:09 And if you got any products you’d like me to test with Polymer Clay to know if it’s
00:05:09 –> 00:05:13 compatible or not, leave your suggestions in the comment section below.
00:05:13 –> 00:05:18 And don’t forget we have just absolutely tons of videos, we may have already tested the
00:05:18 –> 00:05:23 product that you like to know or tried the technique that you wanna learn about, so make

Mmm like this chalky look Cindy.
I think it would look great on a terracotta item. I have a couple of T-light holders made from ceramic terracotta with this chalky/dusty effect. Just hope it will be available here in U.K. so I can create some things with polymer clay to look like ceramics……cheers xx…
Hi Elaine, I think Annie Sloan Calk Paint is available there… isn’t Annie Sloan from the UK? I know her paint is very high quality, and I’m guessing it would probably have the same properties… though of course… It’s always best to test!
