Topics Covered In This Video:

  • Lucy Clay Tools is a company from the Czech Republic.
  • There now is a new distributor for Lucy Tools in Canada… Diane Bruce of VanIslandJewels on Etsy (direct link is posted just below the video on this page).
  • Van Island Jewels (stands for Vancouver Island Jewelry, in Victoria, BC).
  • They ship to Canada and all around the world as well.
  • The LC Baker is short for Lucy Clay Baker and is a baking rack for polymer clay beads, pendants, charms and other polymer clay items.
  • It has two baking surfaces at different levels, for baking flat polymer clay pieces.
  • It also has an array of holes along each of the sides of the rack for supporting bead piercing pins or rods.
  • The manufacturer does not include pins with this product.
  • But after I had some back and forth discussions with Diane Bruce of VanIslandJewels about how it would make much more sense to include the bead pins, she has come up with her own supplier for the pins.
  • When you purchase from Diane, she will include the bead piercing pins with each order.
  • This is cool because, to my knowledge, she is the only Lucy Clay Distributor at the time, that sells the LC Baker tool with the bead pins included.
  • What I love most about the Lucy Clay Baker is the size… it is 7-1/2" x 8" x 2-1/2" which is much bigger than the Amaco bead rack. This means can bake a lot more beads and pieces on this rack.
  • The other thing I like is the second (top) layer. It is meant to be a baking surface, but it really works great as a built-in tent that protects your pieces in the lower area of the baking rack, from scorching.
  • There are a few things I do to get better performance out of this rack…
  • I would never bake a flat polymer clay piece on a surface that has holes in it. It will leave circular shadows or dents on the back of your polymer clay pieces.
  • I also don’t like to bake directly onto a metal surface. It can cause hot spots, scorching and warping.
  • So I cut a double thickness of a manila file folder to fit the bottom and the top baking surface areas, to address this issue.
  • If you are going to bake on the top surface, then make sure to also tent using a foil roasting pan that fits nicely. Don’t forget to check the height inside your oven to be sure it will all fit.
  • I talk about the different types of skewers and mandrels that could be used for bead wires if you don’t have the wires that Diane includes.
  • BTW… I have spoken with Diane since we filmed this video, and she will be sharpening the ends, so YAY… you won’t need to do that yourself!
  • Furthermore, I did file the points myself, on the pins she sent to me.
  • Not only that, but I may also try tweaking the baker with some Sugru like I did to the Amaco Bead rack. See Sugru Hack reference video link below today’s video on this page.
  • ADDENDUM: Unfortunately, Lucy Clay Tools no longer is producing the LC Baker. They do carry some other super high quality polymer clay tools (see link below.). Also, Diane Bruce no longer is a distributor of Lucy Clay Tools. Diane still has some wonderful polymer clay tools and supplies in her VanIslandJewels shop (see link below.)

00:00:03 –> 00:00:08 Hi guys, its Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor, and today’s PcT Product demo, I’m gonna

00:00:08 –> 00:00:12 show you the new Lucy Clay Baker.

00:00:12 –> 00:00:19 Now Lucy Clay Tools is a company from Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic), and we now have a new distributor

00:00:19 –> 00:00:26 in Canada… and she’ll ship to anywhere in the world as well, but her name is Diane Bruce,

00:00:26 –> 00:00:33 and she has a Etsy shop called Van Island Jewels, which stands for Vancouver Island

00:00:33 –> 00:00:41 where she lives in Victoria, BC, so Diane got a hold of me, and she was…she sent me

00:00:41 –> 00:00:44 some cool new Lucy Tools.

00:00:44 –> 00:00:51 So this is the first one I’m gonna show you, this is called the LC Baker, so for Lucy Clay

00:00:51 –> 00:00:57 Baker, and it is for… its’ designed for baking Polymer Clay pieces… like flat pieces

00:00:57 –> 00:01:02 like this, I’ll just throw a few on here, and then it’s got a second tier for baking

00:01:02 –> 00:01:10 more pieces, now it also has little slots in it that you can put bead pins for baking

00:01:10 –> 00:01:17 beads, now it doesn’t come with the pins, only…Diane and I have figured out some new

00:01:17 –> 00:01:18 things for this.

00:01:18 –> 00:01:27 Now, my…there’s a few things that I really love about this baker, first of all, the size,

00:01:27 –> 00:01:32 it’s a really nice size, you’ve probably seen me use the Amaco Bead Rack which is a

00:01:32 –> 00:01:41 lot smaller, and, I mean maybe it’s meant…designed more for toaster ovens and that kind of thing,

00:01:41 –> 00:01:46 though this one here, still fits in my toaster oven quite beautifully, it’s just really nice

00:01:46 –> 00:01:53 size, you can get way more beads and way more pieces in it than the Amaco Rack can.

00:01:53 –> 00:01:59 The other thing I like about it is this second layer, now you could use it for baking on,

00:01:59 –> 00:02:07 but I also think it’s a built in tent, so instead of having to have a tinfoil tent for

00:02:07 –> 00:02:13 it, you can use just this top, and anything that’s underneath it, will be automatically

00:02:13 –> 00:02:16 tented.

00:02:16 –> 00:02:23 These are the things that I would do… that I do when I use it, to get better performance,

00:02:23 –> 00:02:28 first of all, I would never bake a flat piece on something that had holes in it, it’s

00:02:28 –> 00:02:33 just gonna be…you’re gonna get those little imprints all on the back of your raw pieces,

00:02:33 –> 00:02:39 so…and also, I never like to bake directly on metal, I find you get too many hot spots

00:02:39 –> 00:02:42 and little char marks and all kinds of stuff going on.

00:02:42 –> 00:02:50 So first of all, my first tweak would be to cut some file folders, one for the bottom

00:02:50 –> 00:02:57 and one for this top tray, now we have a flat surface to bake on, we have 2 of them if we

00:02:57 –> 00:03:03 want, if you are going to bake on this top layer, you’ll still need a tent, I’ve gotta

00:03:03 –> 00:03:07 go look for one, I’ve just got this baker so I haven’t had a chance to go out and hunt

00:03:07 –> 00:03:15 for one, but I would get a tinfoil pan that would fit perfectly on the top here, this

00:03:15 –> 00:03:20 one’s a little bit small yet, I’d like one just a little bit bigger, but this one

00:03:20 –> 00:03:24 would still work as my tent and then I’ve got it all layered in.

00:03:24 –> 00:03:30 Anything too much higher and you’re not gonna have any room in your oven, I better double

00:03:30 –> 00:03:36 check too just to make sure I have enough room inside my oven for a second layer.

00:03:36 –> 00:03:44 Then it doesn’t come with bead pins, which I think is kinda bizarre actually, but the

00:03:44 –> 00:03:52 thinking was that everyone had bead pins like skewers, and you could use that.

00:03:52 –> 00:03:59 The thing is with the skewers, first of all, I never like to bake beads onto a bamboo skewer,

00:03:59 –> 00:04:07 because they’re kind of absorbent and they tend to grab onto the bead, and sometimes

00:04:07 –> 00:04:14 it’s hard to release the bead from it, they’re also a little too flexi for my use, but you

00:04:14 –> 00:04:17 can do it and it’s useable.

00:04:17 –> 00:04:26 Another thing I had around was a couple of these tools, these Pearl and Etch tools from

00:04:26 –> 00:04:32 Sculpey, now they work in this top area but they don’t work in the lower area…well only

00:04:32 –> 00:04:39 one of them does, because if I go to put it in this lower area, this other end is too

00:04:39 –> 00:04:44 big and it’s not gonna fit in there, the tiny one will work.

00:04:44 –> 00:04:48 So say I’ve got it all loaded up with beads and I wanna put it in, this tiny one will

00:04:48 –> 00:04:53 work, but it’s a little flexible and kinda not that great.

00:04:53 –> 00:05:00 You could find some other mandrels and things, but they’re not everywhere to find, so I’m

00:05:00 –> 00:05:05 surprised that they don’t come with it, but after talking to Diane, she said “well why

00:05:05 –> 00:05:13 don’t we figure out something else” and she got some Copper…I don’t know if it’s

00:05:13 –> 00:05:18 Copper or Steel or what, it looks Copper, some bead pins that are exactly the right

00:05:18 –> 00:05:25 size that will work beautifully for the rack and she’s gonna have them available with the

00:05:25 –> 00:05:31 baker for people that buy the baker.

00:05:31 –> 00:05:36 I don’t know… we were just discussing it, so I don’t know if she will sharpen the ends,

00:05:36 –> 00:05:44 I sharpen my end really easily so that I could pierce the bead right away really easily without

00:05:44 –> 00:05:52 having to pre-pierce the bead, and I just used a little diamond file, any kind of jewelry

00:05:52 –> 00:05:55 file will work and I just filed the end down to a nice sharp point, and then I can press

00:05:55 –> 00:05:57 my beads into it.

00:05:57 –> 00:06:02 So I could have this thing very much loaded up, I would have a whole bunch of pieces in

00:06:02 –> 00:06:11 the bottom here and then I would have a bunch of beads on some skewers, and just load up

00:06:11 –> 00:06:15 this rack, have it nice… as long as I had the clearance for it, I’d have them all in

00:06:15 –> 00:06:19 here, and then pop the lid on and be good to go.

00:06:19 –> 00:06:29 I just…I really like the design of it, I may try tweaking it with the Sugru, I put

00:06:29 –> 00:06:35 the Sugru…there’s a video on it called ‘Sugru hack’, and I put the Sugru into the rack

00:06:35 –> 00:06:41 here to keep the pins from falling out, there may be a way of doing that in the holes here,

00:06:41 –> 00:06:46 but I don’t know it may not be that necessary, we’ll have to see, anyways, I just thought

00:06:46 –> 00:06:47 I’d show you that.

00:06:47 –> 00:06:53 If you liked this baker, do let me know, and if you like this video, let us know about

00:06:53 –> 00:06:54 that as well.

00:06:54 –> 00:07:01 And if you have any products you’d like me to test, demos you’d like me to do for you,

00:07:01 –> 00:07:04 do let me know about that in the comment section below.

00:07:04 –> 00:07:12 And don’t forget we have a great resource over at PolymerClayTutor.com where you can

00:07:12 –> 00:07:15 get answers to all of your Polymer Clay questions.

00:07:15 –> 00:07:22 Now if you’re interested in getting this bead rack or any of the other Lucy Clay tools from

00:07:22 –> 00:07:32 Diane, her website is… her store name is Van Island Jewels and it’s on Etsy.com, alright?

00:07:32 –> 00:07:35 So we’ll see you next time and bye for now.

  • Katy Alexis says:

Sweet deal! Thanks for sharing! So tempting to get that extruder! Bills shmills, right? *cough* I recently had to gorilla glue my Makins and sweet talk it into working awhile longer…

  • Oh, Cindy, I must tell you, I so look forward to seeing you’ve posted a new video but I also dread it because I know you’re going to show me something that I MUST have in my life. I’ve just gone on a Lucy Clay Tools binge, and I have to say the baking tray has COMPLETELY changed my polymer clay baking experience. In my convection oven, I don’t need anything else, it’s amazing. The lucy extruder is the BEST, it is so freeing to use a tool that you don’t have to be so careful with. Thanks so much for sharing your finds with us.

    • You are very welcome Keikoa! I understand your feeling of MUST HAVE that in my life… whenever the new videos come out after the Craft and Hobby Association conference (CHA) I am dying to get every thing I see too! There is nothing more exciting than new supplies and tools!

  • Kathay Iskrzycki says:

I love your videos they are golden for any clay artist weather you are a beginner or a seasoned clay artist and showing the new products on the market is so helpful thank you……Kathay

  • Dixie Ann says:

I have been looking at this bead rack contemplating if I should purchase it or not. I am so glad you did a demo on it. It helps one decide these huge decisions! LOL. By the way why are you not on FaceBook anymore. You used to be there all the time and now I don’t see you anymore. What happened to our Cindy?

    • To be honest Dixie Ann I am getting buried… Doug and I are trying to do the work of about 4 or 5 people so I have unfortunately let certain things slide like posting to social media sites and replying to comments in a timely manner. I should be doing it more consistently and will try to. My priority is always been the content creation, so everyone will always get the videos and posts on time… so at least there’s that. Hopefully we can get some help soon!

  • If you have wire hangers, they would no doubt work too. KT.

By the way, I’m the one who made the Polymer “Cane” Extruders and just wanted you to know polymer clay plugs work well as inserts for them. I made 1/4 ” plugs for mine and they work just fine. Thanks. KT

    • Hey Karen, sorry for the slow response… that sounds excellent! That would be much easier to make than the acrylic ones!

  • Have you ever tested the Lucy Clay slicer? I would be very interested in a review of that device.

    • I have a Lucy Clay Slicer on the way Beth so you will get to see a review pretty soon!

      • Krithika P says:

I’d love to see a review for the slicer too, I’m debating between the slicer and the extruder at the moment, I’d like to get one or the other before the coupon expires!

  • Anna Sabina says:

Wish this had been thought out a bit more. Great ideas for bead pins but Lucy should have included those.

  • Thanks Cindy. I’ve been drooling over the Lucy Clay’s Czextruder ever since one of my fellow guild members brought one to a meeting. It’s great to know there is another distributor this side of the pond.
