** This post is an introduction to one of our paid tutorials.
Many of you have asked me to film more video tutorials about polymer clay canes. More specifically about making flower canes. So today’s addition to the Polymer Clay Library is the first of three tutes that should be helpful. This tutorial Vol-015-2, you will learn how to make three different types of Gerbera flower cane centers.
Each of these centers can be made in an unlimited variety of colors. Because of the variety of styles and color combos you can make with these canes, they can be used for almost any type of flower cane imaginable.
These flower center canes can also be used with a whole variety of other projects too. You can cut slices from them to cover round beads; Add to pattern background sheets; Or for decorating lentil beads.

Great tutorial, I'm glad you kept your cane at a reasonable size... I've seen videos where they use pounds of clay to make a cane. I learned how to scale back my amounts, and learned the little tips you give out in your tutorials. I love the petal, it's different than other petals, and I love the center made by the extruder!

Wow! That was an excellent tutorial Cindy. I learned so much and had so much fun! Finally, someone demonstrated the need and proper procedure for adding the registration line. Now I see why so many of my canes failed... reducing them by rolling them like a snake twisted the inner contents. Great tips.

Cindy, yep, I need someone to walk me through all that stuff. Once done, I am fine, but Lord help me if something goes wrong if I try alone first and mess up. Immediate immense anxiety about wrecking a valuable piece of equipment, LOL!
Was out picking my blanket flowers for a bouquet to give a neighbor when your gerber daisy video came. Immediately saw the resemblance in form, and you are right, just need to tweak the color combos. Using your techniques, it will be beautiful, I am sure.
Want to try to do some of those huge flower pendants you showed too. The reversible one is a great idea!
@Jocelyn: Oh dear… I know what you mean about technology. In regards to the blanket flower, I looked it up and it pretty much looks exactly like a Gerbera only with different colors and more petals. Can’t you just tweak that tutorial to get what you want? Love to see that whale’s tale. Glad you didn’t lose it. Thanks for trying to help Nancy. That is very helpful of you.
@Nancy: Do you mean the clear rolling pin? That is called an acrylic rod. It is in the clay section of the craft store and is very handy for working with clay. Polymer doesn’t stick to the rod and it leaves a very smooth surface. If you meant something else, ask again. Maybe I will better understand.
Nancy, could you rephrase the question? Not sure what you mean when you say “roll” and make the canes.”

I am fairly new at this polymer clay thing. I have been watching the flower cane video. What are you using to roll and make the canes, etc.?
Got the digital camera, got the fax, scanner, and copier, got the work area almost set up, and want to make that blanket flower so bad I can taste it. LOL!
The problem is, I need someone who can show me first. When I try, and something doesn’t work, I freak. Friends are promising assistance, so asap.
Almost lost that gorgeous whale tail photo trying to scan it. I can do a lot of damage trying stuff myself. I need tutors!!!
That’s sound cool Jocelyn! I think I know what you mean but a picture would be way better. Did you get that camera yet?
I had to try it. Combined both of your techniques, Cindy, just fooling around, to try and get a center that would mimic the blanket flower.
Laid out the spiral cane, but then before rolling it up, added side ways wise snakes of double wrapped clay along the top, then rolled.
Dimension, dots, and spiral, all in one slice. Came out well, really liked it, and will do more.

The problem was that the videos will skip or stop and it was really frustrating. I love your videos, they help so much. I have learned so many new things thanks to you and the three or four videos that would run all the way through. I tried everything and last night I REALLY wanted to see the flower center tutorial.
Instead of using AOL, I went to Internet Explorer and typed in your address into the search and then clicked on the first one in the list and went to the back issues and moved forward to the flower center. TADA!!!! it worked, then I tried all of the other videos and they work too. So I think I have the problem finally solved. Thank you a bunch.

Thank you Cindy for the wonderful tutorial on Flower Cane Centers.
I made several of them last night and I was very pleased with my progress.:-) Although, I did have one problem. The Swirl Cane was the most difficult for me to make. I gathered all my scrap pieces together and ran them through the pasta machine and then rolled the clay into a tube. The design on the tube was so beautiful I couldn’t bear to cover it, so I gently rolled the acrylic roller over the tube and used a cutter to make pendants. After 3 attempts I finally stopped trying. LOL

Cannot wait for the next several which will show the flower components all coming together.
Think my first attempt will be with the blanket flower. I love the oranges, reds, yellows in this flower. Cannot wait to see how it comes out!
Goody, goody, goody!! More canes! Im a bit of a cane-aholic. It is one of the first things I started making when I found polymer clay a loooong time ago. And I have amassed quite a collection by now. Im familiar with the lace cane and with the jelly roll too. But as usual Cindy, you have put your own very cool spin on them. I especially like the use of the scraps. And the extruder cane I love! Who would have thunk of that? Why Cindy of course! Thats why we love ya sweety! Cant wait for part 2 and 3. Come on Friday! (oh wait, it is friday, hee hee hee!) XOXO Jamie

@Carrie: That is interesting about the Michaels brand clay. Will have to see if there is any in my local store and check it out!
I was at my local Michaels today and found them putting a new brand of polymer clay on the shelf! It is Michaels own brand (I can’t remember the name). It is 1.29 for 2 oz. It seems most similar to Sculpey III with regard to firmness, and there were not a lot of colors to choose from. Has anyone else seen this? Used it?

I agree with ya’ll, I am very happy to have some lessons in making canes, I have made alot of attempts, and alot of failures, I think alot had to do with using to soft clay, I have found you need a very firm clay to make a workable cane. Looking forward to Friday as always.
Me too Linda! My very first flower cane turned out perfect, it was a balloon flower. So I assumed since my first one came out great that I would be able to continue making good ones. WRONG! I haven’t been able to make a usable one since. But as a result, I have loads of jupiter beads :)
