It’s coming up to Halloween, so I thought it would be a fun to show you how to make some Sabertooth Tiger Beads for making Caveman Jewelry.

Last year, my daughter and her boyfriend made themselves Caveman and Cavewoman Costumes. When I saw their outfits, I just had to make them some Sabertooth necklaces to add to the look.

Since it was a very last minute project, last year, I didn’t have time to show this at the time. Instead, I saved up and am showing you now. They are very easy to make!

You need some Premo Ecru, Premo Regular Translucent, and a 50/50 mix of Premo Ecru and Premo White polymer clay. You’ll also need some brown and black acrylic paint, and some acrylic glazing medium. I used Golden Paints and Glazing Medium, but any acrylic craft paint will do.

In the video I show how to layer, form, bake, drill and antique your Sabertooth Tiger teeth, and also provide some ideas for stringing. A great source for necklace design inspiration, can be found by Googling ‘whale teeth necklace’ – this search will bring up lots of examples of ancient Fijian Tooth Necklaces, perfect for a caveman costume.

I hope you enjoy this mini tutorial. Polymer clay can be used for all kinds of Halloween and Cosplay Costumes. I would love to hear how you have used Polymer clay in your costume designs.

00:00:03 –> 00:00:08 Hi guys, its Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor, and today’s PcT Product Demo, we’re

00:00:03 –> 00:00:08 Hi guys, its Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor, and today’s PcT Mini Tute, I’m gonna

00:00:08 –> 00:00:14 show you how to make some Sabretooth Tiger beads for making Caveman jewelry.

00:00:14 –> 00:00:21 Now it’s just coming up on Halloween pretty soon, and last year I made these really cool

00:00:21 –> 00:00:28 necklaces for my daughter and her boyfriend, they were cavemen and when I saw their outfits,

00:00:28 –> 00:00:34 I knew they just had to have a Sabretooth Tiger necklace made out of Polymer Clay, so

00:00:34 –> 00:00:38 I did that but it was so last minute that I couldn’t show you last year how they were

00:00:38 –> 00:00:41 made, so I thought I’d save ‘em for this year.

00:00:41 –> 00:00:48 So anyways, here is the necklace here with the beads, and the really cool thing about

00:00:48 –> 00:00:53 Polymer Clay is that you can make it look like just about anything, and I have it looking

00:00:53 –> 00:01:03 like ancient Sabretooth Tiger teeth just pulled right out of the soil, they’ve got cracks

00:01:03 –> 00:01:13 and all kinds of rotted tooth areas, cracks and little pitted areas, and they just look

00:01:13 –> 00:01:19 really funky and they’re not near as hard to make as they might look like they are.

00:01:19 –> 00:01:24 So what you’re gonna need is a little bit of clay, now I’m only gonna make one tooth

00:01:24 –> 00:01:28 so I’m just using a little bit of clay here, but if you’re gonna make a whole string of

00:01:28 –> 00:01:32 them, you’re gonna need to use more of it, but it’s the same idea.

00:01:32 –> 00:01:36 Now this is some Ecru…Premo!

00:01:36 –> 00:01:47 Clay I’m using for all of this, and this is Ecru, this is Regular Translucent…the regular

00:01:47 –> 00:01:52 has a little bit more of a Yellowish tinge to it which is perfect for making Faux Bone

00:01:52 –> 00:01:58 or teeth, and then this is a 50-50 mix of Premo!

00:01:58 –> 00:02:05 Ecru and White, and you can see that I didn’t really mix it that well, it doesn’t matter…it

00:02:05 –> 00:02:07 doesn’t matter if it’s kinda streaky.

00:02:07 –> 00:02:08 Now all you need to do…

00:02:08 –> 00:02:11 I rolled these out at the thickest setting on my pasta machine, but if you just rolled

00:02:11 –> 00:02:16 them out by hand, that would be fine too, and I’m just gonna layer these pieces together.

00:02:16 –> 00:02:22 I’ve got the Ecru then the Translucent then the lighter mix, then I’m just gonna run it

00:02:22 –> 00:02:28 through at the thickest setting on my pasta machine, and then I’m just gonna rip it in

00:02:28 –> 00:02:32 half and stack it, and run it through again.

00:02:32 –> 00:02:40 And I’m gonna do this a couple of times, and basically what’s happening is I’m creating

00:02:40 –> 00:02:50 a striped layered sheet of really fine striations going this way, now I want…you’ll be able

00:02:50 –> 00:02:57 to see in one of these…here I’ll show you here, if you look at these teeth really close,

00:02:57 –> 00:03:03 you can see that there is really fine striations of color, and that’s what we’ve done here

00:03:03 –> 00:03:11 with these layers, so we want those layers to be showing up down the whole length, and

00:03:11 –> 00:03:15 you can kinda see it here, it’s a little hard to see, but you want that showing up the whole

00:03:15 –> 00:03:16 length of the tooth.

00:03:16 –> 00:03:26 So I’m just going to rip this into some smaller pieces like this, so that my tooth has this

00:03:26 –> 00:03:29 going through the whole length, now that’s probably a little too much clay.

00:03:29 –> 00:03:34 so I’ll cut some of it off…it would be kind of too big of a tooth, but this will make

00:03:34 –> 00:03:42 two teeth, and you can see there a lot easier where all of your different stripes are.

00:03:42 –> 00:03:50 So I’m just gonna kinda roll this into a tooth kinda shape, so that I’ve got my stripes happening

00:03:50 –> 00:03:56 the whole distance, and if these cracks happen in there, all the better, because then, it’ll

00:03:56 –> 00:04:00 really look like your tooth just has been sitting in the soil forever and wore right

00:04:00 –> 00:04:01 out.

00:04:01 –> 00:04:07 So I’m just gonna kinda roll it and then I’m going to make a point on one end, now

00:04:07 –> 00:04:12 it’s really important that you don’t get this all twisted, ‘cause you don’t want it…your

00:04:12 –> 00:04:19 bone wouldn’t be twisted, so if you do get it…the patterning twisted in it at all,

00:04:19 –> 00:04:22 then what you do is you just kinda straighten it back out.

00:04:22 –> 00:04:28 Okay, so I’m getting a tooth shape…here I have one baked up, and so I’m gonna get

00:04:28 –> 00:04:33 it tapered, I’m also gonna make it a little bit skinny, so it’s a little bit flattened

00:04:33 –> 00:04:39 out, and I’m gonna shape it like a tooth…like a Sabretooth like that.

00:04:39 –> 00:04:44 Now at the top end we have the part that goes into the mouth and attaches in, so we need

00:04:44 –> 00:04:51 to take some sort of tool and open it up here at this end, now this happens to be cracking

00:04:51 –> 00:05:00 quite wonderfully, I’m gonna leave that because that’s what an old tooth would look like.

00:05:00 –> 00:05:05 So I’m putting it fairly deep in there so that it had some sort of part attached to

00:05:05 –> 00:05:07 the mouth there.

00:05:07 –> 00:05:16 Okay, so that’s looking pretty good, also, I don’t want any fingerprints because a Sabretooth

00:05:16 –> 00:05:24 Tiger tooth would not have any fingerprints…I know that for sure, this is of course kind

00:05:24 –> 00:05:31 of a fantasy thing, so it doesn’t have to be too perfect, but it doesn’t have fingerprints,

00:05:31 –> 00:05:32 I know that.

00:05:32 –> 00:05:37 And then another thing you can do is you can take a sharp tool and just put the odd little

00:05:37 –> 00:05:45 poke mark in it, like a little pitted part, like maybe some little bug or something had

00:05:45 –> 00:05:51 gotten into the tooth, and then also just kinda drag your tool along and put a few little

00:05:51 –> 00:05:59 scratch marks and things in it, the more distressed this tooth looks, the better.

00:05:59 –> 00:06:02 Then what you’re gonna do is you’re gonna lay…now this one ended up a little bit bigger

00:06:02 –> 00:06:06 than the other, and that’s fine, you’re going to lay your teeth on a piece of card

00:06:06 –> 00:06:13 stock in the oven, and bake it for the full hour cause I’m using Premo! clay here and

00:06:13 –> 00:06:17 I like to bake it at 275F for 1 hour, with the tented thing over it…if you need more

00:06:17 –> 00:06:20 information on baking, I’ve got videos on that.

00:06:20 –> 00:06:26 Oh, I see a fingerprint there I don’t want, anyways, so I’m gonna pop it in the oven and

00:06:26 –> 00:06:30 bake it, and then I’m gonna end up with something like this.

00:06:30 –> 00:06:38 Now the next stage is to turn into a bead, and the way to do that is just use a hand

00:06:38 –> 00:06:46 drill, and I’ve got a little drill bit, just a regular wooden drill bit attached to a pin

00:06:46 –> 00:06:52 vise, it’s called, and you can just hand drill it all the way through, Polymer Clay is pretty

00:06:52 –> 00:06:53 soft.

00:06:53 –> 00:07:02 And I like to go right up here near the root, and just drill right through until you get

00:07:02 –> 00:07:07 to the other side, now I always let it just barely come through the other side, I can

00:07:07 –> 00:07:11 see that it’s just coming through, and then I’m gonna start from that other end so that

00:07:11 –> 00:07:15 it makes a nice clean hole.

00:07:15 –> 00:07:18 And then what we need to do is we need to distress this, because it still looks, you

00:07:18 –> 00:07:26 know, just like a chunk of plastic actually, oh yeah and also before we continue, if there’s

00:07:26 –> 00:07:31 any kinda rough spots or if you did end up with a fingerprint…a little piece of sandpaper

00:07:31 –> 00:07:36 and just clean that up, and make sure it’s nice and smooth, so it just looks worn right

00:07:36 –> 00:07:38 out, so you clean it up.

00:07:38 –> 00:07:47 And then we’re gonna use some Glazing Medium to antique it, so I’ve got some…you can

00:07:47 –> 00:07:53 use any acrylic paint, I happen to have a really nice selection of higher end art paints,

00:07:53 –> 00:07:59 but you know, a craft paint would be just fine, this is a Raw Umber which is a really

00:07:59 –> 00:08:07 dark Brown paint…acrylic paint, I’m gonna put a little drop of this on my work table…or

00:08:07 –> 00:08:12 I’m going to try to put a drop of it on my work table…maybe I’ll take the lid

00:08:12 –> 00:08:17 off, I haven’t opened this up for a little while, it’s getting a little thick, so there’s

00:08:17 –> 00:08:19 the drop of that.

00:08:19 –> 00:08:25 And then I’m going to also use some Black, and this happens to be Golden Fluid Acrylic…so

00:08:25 –> 00:08:32 this will be a little runnier, or it should be anyways, and I’m gonna mix it with Glazing

00:08:32 –> 00:08:45 Medium ‘cause it makes it a little more fluid, you can work it longer

00:08:45 –> 00:08:49 and it just gives a really nice finish, you could just water down paint, but it won’t

00:08:49 –> 00:08:55 be quite as nice as when you use a glazing medium, and this is Golden Acrylic Glazing

00:08:55 –> 00:08:57 Medium.

00:08:57 –> 00:09:02 And what I’m gonna do is take the glazing medium and work the Black and the Brown paint

00:09:02 –> 00:09:07 right into these crevices and things, and I’ll work it right in, and at first you’ll

00:09:07 –> 00:09:13 think you’ve completely ruined it…and that’s pretty typical for most crafts, there’s

00:09:13 –> 00:09:19 a stage where it kinda looks terrible and you think you’ve really done something wrong,

00:09:19 –> 00:09:21 and you just have to go a little further yet.

00:09:21 –> 00:09:27 Okay, so I’m working it right into all the cracks and scratches and everything else,

00:09:27 –> 00:09:31 and then I’m gonna wipe it back with a paper towel, I wanna make sure to get it nice and

00:09:31 –> 00:09:39 dark in here, because it will have been spending all that time in the dirt, ‘cause it’s been

00:09:39 –> 00:09:45 quite some time since there’s been Sabretooth Tigers around, alright, so I’m gonna work

00:09:45 –> 00:09:52 that in and wipe it back with a paper towel, and look at how instantly old this is getting,

00:09:52 –> 00:09:55 right like that.

00:09:55 –> 00:09:59 And you can add a little more Brown, you could use some little bit different color of Browns,

00:09:59 –> 00:10:05 you could use kind of an Amber kinda color if you wanted to as well, and then you’ve

00:10:05 –> 00:10:08 got this really great looking tooth.

00:10:08 –> 00:10:16 Now as far as the design for stringing goes, I’m not gonna be able to show you that today,

00:10:16 –> 00:10:28 but I got…I used some jute string…actually this one’s hemp, but I strung it up in a way…I

00:10:28 –> 00:10:35 looked online at whale tooth necklaces, they were made by Fijians a long, long time ago,

00:10:35 –> 00:10:41 so there’s some really cool designs for inspiration, for the way the teeth are all knotted together

00:10:41 –> 00:10:46 into a necklace, and then I just made it long enough to tie around their necks.

00:10:46 –> 00:10:50 And it is a great prop, that is the greatest thing about Polymer Clay I think is that you

00:10:50 –> 00:10:57 can use it for all sorts of cool accessories, and it’s a great costume…thing to add to

00:10:57 –> 00:10:58 your costume.

00:10:58 –> 00:11:02 So I hope you enjoyed that, if you did, do let us know.

00:11:02 –> 00:11:11 And also, if you’ve ever made a Halloween costume or a Cosplay type accessory out of

00:11:11 –> 00:11:14 Polymer Clay let us know in the comment section below, I bet you give everybody some really

00:11:14 –> 00:11:16 neat ideas.

00:11:16 –> 00:11:22 And also, if you have suggestions for future videos like this or products you’d like me

00:11:22 –> 00:11:25 to test, leave those in the comment section as well.

00:11:25 –> 00:11:29 And don’t forget, we have tons and tons of really great videos that will teach you all

00:11:29 –> 00:11:32 about Polymer Clay, so make sure to check those out, alright?

00:11:32 –> 00:11:34 We’ll see you next time and bye for now.

My daughter has been working on my grandson’s Halloween costume. He is going as Star Lord from Guardians of the Galexy. My grandson is seven but very tall, so she took an adult, long sleeve t-shirt and converted it into the overcoat. She used polymer clay to imitate the buttons, belt bucket and orb that Star Lord carries. Polymer Clay really is like the ultimate artist/crafer’s medium. Also, when my students wrote and produced a play that included Native Americans, I made their jewelry in much the same way you are showing it here, Cindy. Neat stuff!

  • Dixie Ann says:

Cindy, love the sabor tooth video. It is going to go well with the wine bottles I made with the dragons, bats etc. I am going to make a wine charm with the teeth to hang around the neck of the bottles. Won’t that look adorable!

  • This is soooo cool!! I’m going to love making these! I have made Halloween jewelry out of polymer clay. And doggie costomers, too! My two dogs were a Patrol Officer (Chihauhau) and a Princess Prisoner (my Maltese)! I made a pistol, badge, gold buttons for his blue uniform and a gold buckle for the belt. He was too cute! Oh! And of course handcuffs!! I couldn’t find any small enough so what do you do? You make them out of polymer clay!! Need I say, they took First Place in the Allen Park Scarecrow Festival!!
