Topics Covered In This Video:
- Here with Mark and Becky Sue Mizell in the trailer at the campsite in Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon on our third PcT Roadtrip.
- They are from a small town close by, called Gearhart. It’s near Seaside, Oregon.
- Becky Sue and I spent some time together in the afternoon with our JoolTools.
- Doug and I went to the beach and the river since we’ve been here.
- Tomorrow we will be doing some Kayak Crabbing which is a new venture for me.
- Mark teased me how dangerous it was, though he very seldom loses anyone and that my audience could be rest assured of seeing me again at some point… :)
- Becky Sue told me that Mark had just started making some earrings for their Market Booth, and that we should share them with you all.
- Named Fly Faces… they have polymer clay bead faces and fishing fly bodies.
- Mark makes the earrings using fly tying techniques and polymer clay beads. The beads are all made by Becky.
- Adorable designs with feathers and spiky feather/fur hair.
- One design looks very much like a Royal Coachman Fishing Fly, using red chenille, peacock herl and pheasant feathers.
- Mark said that he has noticed that more women are taking up the sport of fishing these days.
- One pair of earrings used beads made by Becky from my Crocus Bead Tutorial.
- Mark’s day job is as a high school teacher, and he did a class built around the book, A River Runs Through It. He then taught some of his students how to make these fly face earrings. One girl text-ed a photo of her project to her aunt who got worried they were up to no good making demonic/voodoo dolls in class… all a big misunderstanding LOL!
- Mark’s plays a quick jingle on his harmonica… he would have played more except that his instrument had been assembled incorrectly when he cleaned it last… next time :-)
00:00:03 –> 00:00:09 Hi guys, its Cindy Lietz, your Polymer Clay Tutor, and I am here with Mark and Becky Mizel,
00:00:09 –> 00:00:10 and you guys are from the Gearhart…
00:00:10 –> 00:00:11 Gearhart?
00:00:11 –> 00:00:13 (MM)Yup, Gearhart, Seaside area.
00:00:13 –> 00:00:20 (CL)Yeah, and it’s in Oregon, not too far from Seaside right, okay, and we’re out
00:00:20 –> 00:00:25 here on a Road Trip, and this is the third one, and we’ve been spending a little bit
00:00:25 –> 00:00:27 of time working with the JOOLtool.
00:00:27 –> 00:00:34 Becky has a JOOLtool so we were doing some dueling JOOLtool videos, and we also went
00:00:34 –> 00:00:41 to the beach, and to the river and tomorrow we’re gonna be going kayaking and some crabbing
00:00:41 –> 00:00:42 with you guys.
00:00:42 –> 00:00:43 (MM) Kayak crabbing, yeah.
00:00:43 –> 00:00:45 (CL)Now that’s a new experience, I haven’t done that before, that should be very fun.
00:00:45 –> 00:00:48 (MM)You probably have no idea how dangerous it really is.
00:00:48 –> 00:00:52 (CL)Ooh…I hope you have a life vest.
00:00:52 –> 00:00:56 (MM)Yeah, we do, we very seldom lose anybody.
00:00:56 –> 00:00:58 (CL)Okay, well that is very good to know.
00:00:58 –> 00:01:03 (MM)Your audience can rest assured that they’ll probably see you again at some point.
00:01:03 –> 00:01:10 (CL)Oh, that’s good news, well actually we’re here ‘cause Becky told me that Mark
00:01:10 –> 00:01:15 is making these really cool earrings, and you just started making them, right?
00:01:15 –> 00:01:19 (MM)Yup, (CL) And we’ve got to show them to you, they’re just darling, we’ll start
00:01:19 –> 00:01:25 with this one here, I just love the little face, now what do you call these guys, or
00:01:25 –> 00:01:26 girls?
00:01:26 –> 00:01:28 (MM)Well we call them fly faces.
00:01:28 –> 00:01:29 (CL) Uh, huh…
00:01:29 –> 00:01:30 (MM)Yeah.
00:01:30 –> 00:01:32 (CL)Now I know why, but you tell everybody why.
00:01:32 –> 00:01:37 (MM)Yeah, well Becky makes the beads…she makes those face beads, in fact she made all
00:01:37 –> 00:01:39 the beads for all of these…
00:01:39 –> 00:01:40 (CL)And they’re all from Polymer clay.
00:01:40 –> 00:01:46 (MM)Polymer clay, and I’ve been tying flies since I was probably in 7th grade and so I
00:01:46 –> 00:01:51 used…you know, some of the same techniques that I use when I’m tying a fly.
00:01:51 –> 00:01:56 (CL)Right, and here’s one especially here that looks like a fishing fly.
00:01:56 –> 00:02:02 (MM)Yeah, like see the body on that is actually…it’s very close to a Royal Coachman, I mean I fudged
00:02:02 –> 00:02:08 a little bit on materials, a purist would want Red floss instead of Red Chenille like
00:02:08 –> 00:02:13 I used there, but pretty much that’s the way it goes, the Green sparkly is actually
00:02:13 –> 00:02:18 a Peacock curl wrapped around the wire.
00:02:18 –> 00:02:23 (CL)Oh, and it’s just…when you see it in person, it’s just really sparkly and
00:02:23 –> 00:02:26 pretty, now what kind of feathers are these at the bottom?
00:02:26 –> 00:02:34 (MM)I’m pretty sure that that is from one of the feathers that we got…gosh, where
00:02:34 –> 00:02:35 were we…
00:02:35 –> 00:02:36 (BM) From the Pheasants?
00:02:36 –> 00:02:40 (MM)When we were over in John Day right, or no not John Day, we were in Walla Walla right?
00:02:40 –> 00:02:41 (BM) Right, the Pheasants.
00:02:41 –> 00:02:44 (MM)Yeah, I think, but I’m not positive, I can’t remember now.
00:02:44 –> 00:02:49 (CL) Yeah, they look like little legs, like she would be dancing on… her hair is just
00:02:49 –> 00:02:53 awesome, and it’s all spindly and spiky.
00:02:53 –> 00:02:58 My dad used to tie fishing flies when I was a kid, and so I understand the process, it’s
00:02:58 –> 00:02:59 quite a skill.
00:02:59 –> 00:03:05 Now these girls are wonderful (MM)Yeah, that was really pretty tough to get those feathers
00:03:05 –> 00:03:08 to look like wings in the back.
00:03:08 –> 00:03:13 (CL)Yeah, to get them to lay right (MM)Yeah, it took some doing.
00:03:13 –> 00:03:19 (CL)Yeah, some finagling, they’re really great, oh I just love them, and you were saying
00:03:19 –> 00:03:24 that you noticed that there were a lot more females doing fly fishing now.
00:03:24 –> 00:03:32 (MM)Oh, it’s changed dramatically, I fished and shoot quite a bit, and you know, over
00:03:32 –> 00:03:39 the past 10 years or so, maybe a quarter to a third of the fishermen were actually women…
00:03:39 –> 00:03:45 (CL)Oh yeah, there’s been some movies I think with some girls fishing in them, that
00:03:45 –> 00:03:49 probably would up the romantic factor of it all.
00:03:49 –> 00:03:50 (MM)Right.
00:03:50 –> 00:03:51 (CL)Oh, these are great.
00:03:51 –> 00:03:57 (MM)I think those beads…those beads I think Becky learned to make from you, I think.
00:03:57 –> 00:04:02 (CL)Yes, she did, this is from the Crocus flower tutorial, and she’s changed the shape
00:04:02 –> 00:04:07 a little, has them opening up a little bit, they look like wonderful little dresses on
00:04:07 –> 00:04:12 these girls, and…this is just…their faces and their hair, with the frilly dress…it’s
00:04:12 –> 00:04:13 just too awesome.
00:04:13 –> 00:04:17 Let’s see, what else is left here, we got one more set.
00:04:17 –> 00:04:19 (MM)And I…
00:04:19 –> 00:04:27 I did a…my day job is a school teacher, and last year, I did a class kinda built around
00:04:27 –> 00:04:31 Norman Maclean’s book, ‘A River Runs Through It’ (CL)Yes, yes, yeah, I’ve seen the
00:04:31 –> 00:04:32 movie.
00:04:32 –> 00:04:37 (MM)But anyway, I had the kids learn how to tie flies, and you know taught them some basic
00:04:37 –> 00:04:44 stuff, and well, yeah I got them tying up some earrings toward the end of the class,
00:04:44 –> 00:04:52 and one of the kids, she got her earrings made…and it was a pair kind of like this,
00:04:52 –> 00:04:54 and she snapped a picture of it with her phone.
00:04:54 –> 00:04:59 She texted the picture back to her aunt…who I think lives in Montana, and her aunt texted
00:04:59 –> 00:05:07 her right back saying basically, “Are you guys making demonic stuff in that class?”
00:05:07 –> 00:05:08 ‘Cause I mean it does sorta look like a…
00:05:08 –> 00:05:11 (CL)Like a little voodoo doll or something right?
00:05:11 –> 00:05:12 (MM)Yeah, like a voodoo doll.
00:05:12 –> 00:05:13 (CL)Oh my gosh.
00:05:13 –> 00:05:18 (MM)She thought…yeah, she thought we were up to no good at the High School, but we assured
00:05:18 –> 00:05:19 her that…
00:05:19 –> 00:05:26 (CL)That no indeed, you were doing something ‘arty’, well that is way too awesome.
00:05:26 –> 00:05:30 Well, I just loved spending time with you guys, and we had a good time this afternoon
00:05:30 –> 00:05:36 doing the JOOLtool stuff, and we’re looking forward to spending some time fishing tomorrow,
00:05:36 –> 00:05:38 and…well not really fishing, crabbing.
00:05:38 –> 00:05:41 (MM)Yeah it counts, it counts.
00:05:41 –> 00:05:43 (CL)Yeah, it all counts?
00:05:43 –> 00:05:49 So we better get going, it’s getting to be late evening, and we are going to see you
00:05:49 –> 00:05:50 soon.

I want to thank everyone for taking the time to watch the video. Cindy and Doug are the fun people to work with and I enjoy the time we have together when they come down and see us.
Thanks Mark! Doug and I loved spending time with you guys. The crab feast next to Becky’s incredible flower garden was a real treat! I hear Doug left his long johns hanging to dry after we went crabbing… so it looks like we’re gonna have to return sometime and pick those up. ;)
Please make a video on how to make barrettes. Thank you!
We already did Laura… here’s the link: Polymer Clay Barrettes Tutorial
What a fun visit! Crabbing, kayaking and of course PC. Becky and Mark are sooooooo nice. You and Doug always meet the nicest people. Glad we could share your visit……..
We sure do Patt! Maybe one day we will get to meet you?
Great video. It is amazing how polymer clay can span so many different styles.
We are in Florida and go crabbing. We have blue crabs. What kind were those? They look pretty large.
Hi Lena, yeah some of them were huge! I believe they were rock crabs but Doug is the marine biologist (no actually he is), so if I’m wrong he can correct me. It was really fun… I had never Kayaked before let alone did Kayak Crabbing. After trying it once, Doug and I want to buy a Kayak to take on our Roadtrips!
They are Dungeness Crabs :-)
Really? Huh? I thought they were larger. How neat! Thanks! I always stuck them in the category as King Crabs. (:
I’m so intrigued by these fly face earrings. I would love to know the process and especially would like to know what makes the hair for these faces. Are we going to see something similar in a video soon? I’d love to make a pair for myself to show off. Or…where can we buy a pair if that isn’t something we’ll be showed.
Nancy,
I too was intrigued and wanted to see a demo of someone making a fly. I found this youtube video that showed someone making fishing flies. There were lots of other videos too, but this one gave me a good overview. What patience and skill! I think I’ll stick to clay. (: Lena
.
Hi Nancy, if you read Mark’s comment above to Jocelyn, he is selling them.
Oooooo, I so want a pair of those earrings!!! I can trade with feathers, have tons of them, lol.
Good to see this couple again, they are fun.
Hi Jocelyn,
Glad you like the earrings. I’m not likely to do any tutorials, but being the greedy capitalist that I am I’d be happy to sell you a pair. If there’s a particular style you like, let us know and we’ll send some pictures your way. They are $24.00 a pair plus shipping.
