- Today in the PcT Test Lab we are testing a brand-new product to the market called DupliColor… a user-friendly pigment duplication medium for polymer clay.
- I am really excited because I think it’s going to revolutionize the way we do color mixing with polymer clay.
- Now before I go too much further, make sure to watch to the end of the video, because I have a special gift for you at the very end.
- What I think is so exciting about this product is that it is so simple to use.
- Now, it is a medium that you can add to any light colored polymer clay (it doesn’t matter the brand), but you need to use a color that has no color in it.
- I’m going to be using Premo White Translucent, but you could also use White or Pearl or something like that.
- You will also need the medium and a highly pigmented printed material such as a photo (matte finish), magazine clipping, a flyer or even a newspaper picture.
- Then what this product does, is duplicate that color and saturate your polymer clay with it, which makes it really easy for creating any color you desire.
- I show you an example of one of the test mixes I did use a richly colored magazine clipping.
- This product is perfect for those that struggle with color mixing… because basically it is a total no-brainer.
- I then demo how to use the DupliColor… and the special gift I have for you.

00:00:12 –> 00:00:18 And it is a pigment duplication medium for Polymer Clay and I am really excited about
00:00:18 –> 00:00:24 it, ‘cause I think it’s going to revolutionize the way we do color mixing with Polymer Clay.
00:00:24 –> 00:00:30 Now…oh, yeah, before we get going here, just make sure to stay to the end because
00:00:30 –> 00:00:33 I actually have a special gift for you, okay?
00:00:33 –> 00:00:39 Now what I think is so exciting about this product is that it is so simple to use, now
00:00:39 –> 00:00:46 it is a medium that you can add to a light color of Polymer Clay…now it doesn’t matter
00:00:46 –> 00:00:51 the brand, any brand will work, but you need to use a color that has no color in it, so
00:00:51 –> 00:00:52 this is Premo!
00:00:52 –> 00:00:57 White Translucent, that’s what I’m gonna be using today, but you can also use White or
00:00:57 –> 00:01:00 Pearl or something like that.
00:01:00 –> 00:01:07 Then, you need the medium, and then you need a highly pigmented printed material, now it
00:01:07 –> 00:01:15 could be a photograph, it could be a magazine clipping, it could be a flyer or newspaper,
00:01:15 –> 00:01:18 something like that, something that has a lot of pigment in it.
00:01:18 –> 00:01:23 And then what this product does is it will duplicate the color and saturate your clay
00:01:23 –> 00:01:28 with it, and makes it really easy for color mixing, now let me just show you an example
00:01:28 –> 00:01:31 of one of the tests I did.
00:01:31 –> 00:01:36 Now this is an ad or something like that, and I really was drawn to the color that’s
00:01:36 –> 00:01:47 in this section here, and I used the DupliColor medium on a Translucent piece of clay and
00:01:47 –> 00:01:53 just look at the stunning color that it drew from that printing, isn’t that beautiful?
00:01:53 –> 00:01:57 Now I think this is gonna be really great for those of you that struggle a little bit
00:01:57 –> 00:02:01 with color mixing, because it’s just basically a total no-brainer.
00:02:01 –> 00:02:09 Now, to do this what we’re gonna need to do is condition our clay, so I’m just gonna condition
00:02:09 –> 00:02:15 this a little bit, I’ve already preconditioned it so I’m just gonna use my Never Knead here
00:02:15 –> 00:02:23 to flatten it out a bit before I run it through the pasta machine, and then what we’re gonna
00:02:23 –> 00:02:29 do is we’re gonna roll it at the thickest setting to start, and then we’re going to
00:02:29 –> 00:02:33 roll it a little thinner.
00:02:33 –> 00:02:39 There’s only so much color that can be drawn out of the photograph, so you can’t use that
00:02:39 –> 00:02:45 much clay, so I’m gonna roll it down to about a 3 setting which is about 4 playing cards
00:02:45 –> 00:02:47 thick on this pasta machine.
00:02:47 –> 00:02:55 Then, I’ve already pre-chosen some…a couple of different cuttings from this magazine here,
00:02:55 –> 00:03:02 and I’ve got this one here, I really loved the Green on here, and this one here with
00:03:02 –> 00:03:05 the Blue and…the Purple-y Blue color.
00:03:05 –> 00:03:11 Now, what you need to do is…okay I’m going to just tear this apart here first to start,
00:03:11 –> 00:03:15 ‘cause I’m gonna need a couple sections, now I need to…I just want to transfer the
00:03:15 –> 00:03:22 color that’s in this area here, so what I’m going to do is just kind of eye ball it and
00:03:22 –> 00:03:31 figure out the area that I want to cover, so kinda like that, and then I’m gonna rip
00:03:31 –> 00:03:38 the top part off, and get that one ready to go, make that a little straighter.
00:03:38 –> 00:03:45 And then what we’re gonna do is we’re going to…so I’ve got the piece here, I’m gonna
00:03:45 –> 00:03:55 flip it over like this, and we’re gonna add the DupliColor to the surface.
00:03:55 –> 00:04:03 Now, you just wanna add a few drops to the top here, and then spread it out in a thin
00:04:03 –> 00:04:09 even layer, and you wanna make sure that every area of the clay has been covered, and what
00:04:09 –> 00:04:15 you’re gonna do is let that sit for about 30 seconds or so, what you want it to do is
00:04:15 –> 00:04:22 you want it to just start to dry a little, but the surface is going to remain tacky.
00:04:22 –> 00:04:27 And this is just about ready to go, I can feel it it’s a little bit sticky there, and
00:04:27 –> 00:04:39 I’m just going to lay this on top of my other piece, like this, and then we’re going to
00:04:39 –> 00:04:44 set this one aside, now it needs a little bit of time to get saturated and soaked up
00:04:44 –> 00:04:45 those pigments.
00:04:45 –> 00:04:54 Now, on this one here, we’re going to focus on the area there where the Green Ocean…I
00:04:54 –> 00:05:00 guess that’s an ocean, Green area of the ocean is, and we’re going to cut a piece that
00:05:00 –> 00:05:08 will fit that one perfectly, so let’s see here, I’m just gonna tear it along the one
00:05:08 –> 00:05:13 side, and let’s see, this might tear a little easier if I kind of follow it along…alright
00:05:13 –> 00:05:20 so I’ll tear it along this end and along here…I don’t wanna go across the whole photograph
00:05:20 –> 00:05:26 because I don’t wanna catch all the other colors, I’m gonna be blending these together
00:05:26 –> 00:05:31 later and I don’t want to get a really muddy color.
00:05:31 –> 00:05:37 So I’m just gonna straighten this out a bit ‘cause it’s a little crooked, and then what
00:05:37 –> 00:05:46 we’re gonna do is I’m gonna flip that one over, and do the same thing with the DupliColor,
00:05:46 –> 00:05:53 so we’re gonna put a few drops of this on the surface, and smear that around and let
00:05:53 –> 00:05:58 that one sit for a minute or so.
00:05:58 –> 00:06:04 And I think this is gonna be a great product for anyone, like I said, that has trouble,
00:06:04 –> 00:06:10 ‘cause what you can do is just be inspired by any photograph that you see and get that
00:06:10 –> 00:06:17 exact color, so I’m just gonna lay that on top there, and then I’m going to put that
00:06:17 –> 00:06:18 aside as well.
00:06:18 –> 00:06:23 Now we can bring out the other one and you can see this works really quickly, you can
00:06:23 –> 00:06:29 see that the color is already starting to be saturated, and I’m just gonna lay this
00:06:29 –> 00:06:35 out and you can take a look at it, and it’s amazing the different pigments it starts pulling
00:06:35 –> 00:06:42 out from the surfaces, and how quickly and rich that color gets.
00:06:42 –> 00:06:49 And so what I’m gonna do is I’m going to just ball this up and start mixing those colors
00:06:49 –> 00:06:55 together, and it’s so exciting, I just really find it fun it’s like an experiment, every
00:06:55 –> 00:06:59 time I try this, every time we test it out.
00:06:59 –> 00:07:03 And I’ll have to run it through the pasta machine a couple of times to get those colors
00:07:03 –> 00:07:12 all nicely mixed, and you can see it’s just…some Translucent was still on the top layer there,
00:07:12 –> 00:07:16 it’s only going to draw in so much color like I said.
00:07:16 –> 00:07:21 But that’s why…with the Translucent, you’re going to get a rich color all the way through
00:07:21 –> 00:07:25 and it won’t make it pastel or anything like that.
00:07:25 –> 00:07:32 So there we go, and you can see this color is just so beautiful, and it matches this
00:07:32 –> 00:07:33 beautifully.
00:07:33 –> 00:07:39 Now let’s see how the other one is doing, and look at that, we’ll peel it up, and it
00:07:39 –> 00:07:49 is a Golden Green color that is so bright and exciting, alright, I just love this product.
00:07:49 –> 00:07:54 So I did promise you that I would have a little gift for you, so let me just grab that for

ouch. I was so excited about this product! My mind was reeling the entire time. No more wasted outdated magazines! Go green and save on colors…on and on my mind was thinking, imagining…I almost didn’t finish the video so I could just go to the website and order, but then i thought…what if Cindy was going to give all her faithful members a free trial offer! So i stayed and watched. Oh can you feel the sinking of my heart?

I fell all he way to the floor, what a great product it would be if real. I was already planning to do a search to find this amazing product. I do though love the nozzle on the bottle. Where might that be found?

Hi Deane, I just mixed that up with a little Premo Wasbi, 18K Gold and some Translucent…. there also may have been a pinch or two of some other colors just to tweak it a bit.
Wow, Cindy, The best April fools joke in years. There was I in Oz. Getting so excited and thinking my polymer friends will drool over this. Nearly emailed a friend who has gone to Sydney to do a polymer workshop this Easter. Well done both of you. I’m sure all of us will now be waiting for you to ‘discover’ the real thing somewhere down the track. :-)

Linda Monte, we are so happy to have you part of our clay group and I feel so bad Cindys joke upset you. I know how confusing things are when you first start out in this medium. Even us experienced clayers still are confused over some things so please don’t feel alone. We are all here to help each other. Once you have known Cindy you will find her to be warm, friendly, helpful and offers so much to help you grow with your claying experience. She does have that wonderful sense of humor and I guess most of us who have been here for awhile know about her April Fools jokes. Even I was writing down all this information in hopes of jumping in my car and rushing off to puchase this product and I’m as old as dirt. :) God bless and have a Happy Easter!
The minute I saw that it was posted April 1st, I knew it was a joke, because I know that much about you Cindy. But it was a good try.
Oh that’s a good one Cindy! I laughed until my sides hurt… having just spent an hour or so duplicating the colour of some wool I have for a sweater… I could have used that “magic stuff”!

Well! You got me a beauty! I was already trying to work out where I would get this wonderful product from. Being in Australia, a lot of the goodies you show we cannot get here, or have trouble getting here. And being a liquid, I thought “blast, they won’t ship that from Canada”.
Well done my girl!……mind you, am very disappointed that this product doesn’t exist!

Good eye Dawn! I was going to put oil in the bottle but didn’t want to foul it up for putting Ultradome in it later, so opted for Rubbing Alcohol instead. (Water took too long to dry and I didn’t want to mix the water into the clay.)

BTW, yes, there is something I would like to see more of, and that is complex canes.
I think you’ve said elsewhere that complex canes are more advanced, but that is just my point…. I like to stretch myself beyond my skill level. I actually own a tutorial to make a 6 pound butterfly cane – yes 6 POUNDS – and believe me, i am nowhere near ready to tackle that, (nor do I think I will ever want to make a cane that big. I didn’t even know people did that!).
But I have so much to learn about choosing colors for complex canes, that is probably where I need the most help. And mixing patterns. And and and…..
Anyway, that’s my two cents worth, and it’s no April Fool’s joke!
